Stat Review
How does Alex Young compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
After failing to secure a starting role in summer camp, Young began the season in the Diamondbacks' bullpen. The lefty was pitching well early on, allowing just three earned runs in his first nine innings of 2020, and eventually the team decided to give Young another look as a starter with the likes of Madison Bumgarner, Robbie Ray and Luke Weaver failing to get the job done in the rotation. Young was not terrible as a starter outside of a six-run blowup against the Angels on Sept. 17. His swinging-strike and chase rates portend a better K%, but to date the strikeouts have yet to manifest at the big-league level. Righties teed off on Young last season, and until he shows more of a strikeout punch, the risk will outweigh the reward in the vast majority of matchups.
Young began the season in a long-relief role at Triple-A Reno before transitioning to the rotation, and while he didn't turn any heads there, injuries to Arizona's rotation ultimately paved the way for the lefty to make his major-league debut in June. He held his own across 15 starts and a pair of relief appearances following his promotion, compiling a 3.56 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 83.1 innings. While Young's numbers look solid on the surface, things aren't as rosy if you dig a little deeper. His 7.7 BB% was good but not great, while his strikeout (20.3%) and home-run rates (1.5 HR/9) left something to be desired. He had that HR/9 despite a groundball rate pushing 50%. On account of those peripherals, the estimators say the southpaw is a candidate to regress in his sophomore season, but Young should be in the running for a rotation spot and he's at least on the streaming radar.
