2025 Fantasy Outlook
Who says you can't go home again? Shenton, a Seattle area native, was drafted by the Mariners but eventually traded to the Rays in 2021 for Diego Castillo. The Rays, after watching Shenton for four seasons, decided he was not in the future plans despite some gaudy numbers Double-A and Triple-A and DFA'd him only to then send Shenton back to Seattle this past November. Shenton was on the up/down shuttle between Durham and St. Pete a couple of times in 2024 with little playing time but showed a strong command of the strike zone, which was his calling card in the minors. Shenton can draw walks with the best of them, but also swings and misses quite often and owns a 26.3% strikeout rate in the minors. Last season, he hit .258/.361/.497 for Durham with 20 homers in a friendly environment which he will not enjoy in Seattle should he make the roster. Shenton is out of options, so he has to make the club out of spring. The team is looking for more left-handed pop, so he has that going for him. Otherwise, at least he got his relocation back home funded for him through the trade. Read Past Outlooks
Traded to Seattle
The Rays traded Shenton to the Mariners on Tuesday in exchange for cash, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
After making his MLB debut and appearing in 19 games for the Rays in 2024, Shenton will now reunite with the organization that originally drafted him back in 2019. The 26-year-old infielder slashed .258/.361/.497 with 20 home runs and 65 RBI across 363 minor-league plate appearances last season, and he will likely remain an organizational depth piece upon moving to Seattle. JT Chargois was DFA'd in a corresponding move.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Shenton was part of the return the Rays received from Seattle when they shipped Diego Castillo to the club near the 2021 trade deadline. Shenton was an accomplished collegiate hitter at FIU when Seattle drafted him in the 5th round of the 2019 draft and he has hit .290/.395/.534 in over 300 games at the minor league level around a serious hip injury that reduced his time in 2022. Shenton hit 29 homers with 99 RBIs and a .304 average between Double-A and Triple-A earning himself a spot on the 40-man roster this winter. He has power, but a 27% strikeout rate last season and a 30% strikeout rate as a minor league hitter certainly raises some risks about how he handles major league pitching. Cueing the Moneyball image of Brad Pitt pointing at Jonah Hill, Shenton does get on base and hits for power. He may resemble Scott Hatteburg fielding at first as well early on, but his left-handed power could be a factor in AL-Only fantasy leagues in 2024 for reserve-round consideration on draft day.
