Recovering from shoulder surgery

Shoulder
August 20, 2024
Double-A Hartford placed Montgomery on its full-season injured list after he underwent left shoulder surgery in May, Geoff Pontes of Baseball America reports.
ANALYSIS
He slashed .283/.313/.500 with two home runs, three steals, 20 strikeouts and two walks in 11 games for Hartford before suffering the season-ending injury in late April. Set to turn 22 years old Sept. 9, Montgomery possesses above-average raw power and plus speed, but he struck out at a 41.7 percent clip in his first test against Double-A pitching. It's unclear if Montgomery will be fully recovered in time for spring training.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
An ultra-toolsy 6-foot-4 outfielder whom the Rockies selected with the eighth overall pick in 2021, Montgomery was limited to 62 games in his first full season due to quad and hand injuries. He returned to Single-A from a complex-league rehab assignment in early July and proceeded to slash .322/.412/.514 with four home runs, two triples, 18 doubles, six steals, a 26.5 K% and an 8.8 BB% in 42 games. Fresno is a great place to hit, especially in the summer, and Montgomery took advantage. His chase rate was very poor, according to Prospects Live, and hit tool concerns have followed him since high school. He has plus power and plus speed, and could add even more power in the coming years. Montgomery is kind of like a prep version of Joey Wiemer -- big outfielders with huge tools who might not hit enough. Look for Montgomery to spend most of the year in another hitter-friendly environment at High-A Spokane.
