PTampa Bay Rays  AAA
September 16, 2024
The Rays optioned Sulser to Triple-A Durham on Monday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Sulser hasn't allowed a run in 11.2 innings with the Rays, but he has minor-league options remaining and that works against him. Colin Poche (shoulder) has returned from the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move.

Stat Review
How does Cole Sulser compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9

  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2022
2021
2020
Sulser led the Orioles in saves for the second straight season during the 2021 campaign. He also recorded single-digit saves for the second straight season, finishing 2021 with eight (which technically tied Cesar Valdez for the team lead). Sulser's modest save totals are a reflection of manager Brandon Hyde's preference for a fluid closer role and the team's poor record, as Baltimore finished with the third-lowest save total in baseball with 26. The right-hander posted excellent stats otherwise, recording a 2.70 ERA and 1.12 WHIP with five wins and six holds over a career-high 63.1 innings. With a four-pitch arsenal that includes a fastball, devastating changeup, slider and curve, Sulser had an above-average 28.4% strikeout rate while nearly cutting his walk rate in half to 8.9%. Sulser appeared to be in line for save chances with the Orioles once again in 2022, but he'll face increased competition for ninth-inning work after he was traded to the Marlins ahead of the regular season and could be forced to settle for a setup or middle-relief role.
Saves are saves are saves. We have to roster them as it is nearly impossible to punt a category and win a rotisserie league, and impossible if you play in high-stakes leagues. This is how a player like Sulser ends up on teams -- he earned five saves in 2020 despite some rather ugly numbers around those saves. His minor-league career saw him strikeout out 10.4 batter per nine innings with a solid walk rate, but that walk rate has not followed him to the big-league level (20 walks in 30 innings). When he is right, he is getting ahead of hitters with the fastball and making them look silly with his excellent changeup. However, the control issues make it tough for him to stay in the closer role and Baltimore has already said it is not his job to lose. The pieces are there, but until the command shows up, he is tough to roster.
One team's trash can be another team's treasure, particularly when the first team (Rays) has World Series aspirations and the second team (Orioles) has No. 1 overall pick aspirations. Sulser was designated for assignment by Tampa Bay last September and quickly claimed by Baltimore. He was cut loose more due to a roster crunch than poor performance, as the 30-year-old righty had missed bats while preventing runs at Triple-A and in 7.1 MLB innings for the Rays in 2019. With Hunter Harvey (elbow) unavailable, Sulser took hold of the Orioles' closer role early in 2020 and there is no reason to expect that to change as long as he keeps his head above water. He leans primarily on a 94 mph fourseamer and 88 mph slider, while occasionally mixing in a changeup. His stuff is just OK by late-inning standards, but it helps his cause that he has generated groundballs over 50 percent of the time since switching organizations.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Leading candidate for saves
PBaltimore Orioles  AAA
September 25, 2021
Sulser seems likely to be Baltimore's primary closer over the rest of the season with Tyler Wells landing on the 10-day injured list with a shoulder injury Saturday.
ANALYSIS
He has actually outpitched Wells lately as well, so he was already trending in the right direction. Sulser has a 2.79 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 73 strikeouts in 61.1 innings this season.
