Nunez impressed enough in summer camp to earn a spot on the Rockies' taxi squad, but he failed to join the major-league roster during the abbreviated 2020 season. Even when injuries plagued Colorado's catchers, Drew Butera was brought on to provide depth rather than Nunez. Nunez has been incredibly effective at drawing walks, and he's posted double-digit walk rates in each of his last six seasons in the minor-league ranks. However, he's failed to generate enough production with his bat to warrant much consideration for a full-time role in the majors. Even at Coors Field, the Rockies' catchers have been unable to create enough separation to cement a clear everyday player. The role is still in question heading into the spring, and Nunez could be in the competition. He should compete for playing time, but Elias Diaz is likely the favorite heading into 2021, leaving Nunez in a potential depth role once again.
Nunez has one excellent skill -- a patient approach at the plate that generates plenty of walks. He has posted a double-digit walk rate in each of the previous six years. He hits for enough power and average for his position, and can catch enough that he enters camp as the favorite to win the backup job behind Tony Wolters. We know Wolters can't hit much, but the team loves the defense. Drew Butera was brought in on an NRI deal to push Nunez this spring. If Nunez can show more stick than he did in his small sample in the bigs last year, he could get the 60 share of this likely 60/40 platoon with Wolters, as neither guy is good enough to carry this job in an 80/20 capacity. Nunez has more value in OBP formats, and while he is not a great real-life or fantasy option, he doesn't have to be great to earn the top spot on this depth chart.
The 20-year-old catching prospect followed an eye-opening offensive campaign at rookie ball in 2014 with a similarly impressive season at Low-A Asheville last year, taking full advantage of the favorable hitting environment at Asheville. Perhaps the most impressive aspect of his offensive performance was his 53:55 BB:K in 441 plate appearances. He's expected to stick behind the plate, putting him on radar of dynasty leagues. Entering his age-21 season he could once again impress at the plate in another favorable hitting environment at High-A Modesto, opening the possibility that he finishes the season as one of the top catching prospects in the minors.
