2025 Fantasy Outlook
Rom developed a left shoulder injury during spring training of last year and eventually underwent arthroscopic surgery in early May, ending his season before it began. It was a missed year of development for a guy who could have used it, as Rom didn't offer much promise during his eight starts with the Cardinals in 2023, putting up an ERA over 8.00 and a WHIP over 2.00. The left-hander has consistently fanned more than a batter per inning in the minors, but control has been an issue in the upper levels and he gets by more with deception than stuff. Rom could eventually be in the mix for starts in what looks like a transition year for St. Louis, but more time at Triple-A Memphis is needed for the 25-year-old after a lost season. He slid farther down the pecking order after be outrighted off the 40-man roster over the winter. Read Past Outlooks

Rom (shoulder) cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
The Cardinals added some prospects to the 40-man roster as Rule 5 draft protection, so Rom was a roster casualty. He had arthroscopic shoulder surgery in May and did not pitch at all in 2024. If he's healthy this spring, he should provide rotation depth at Triple-A.

Farm Futures: Rookie Infielder Targets
James Anderson highlights his favorite prospects to target at each infield position, featuring several strong rookie targets at catcher and second base, including Blue Jays second baseman Will Wagner.
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Rom had a steady rise throughout the minors after the Orioles made him a fourth-round pick out of high school back in 2018. He's posted at least a 26.1 percent strikeout rate at each minor-league stop since A-ball, but while the whiffs have been there, his walks and ERA have ballooned against higher competition. This past season, Rom collected a 4.82 ERA, 1.57 WHIP and 11.4 percent walk rate at the Triple-A level. The left-hander was traded to St. Louis as part of the return for Jack Flaherty and was torched for an 8.02 ERA and 2.08 WHIP across eight starts during his first stint in the majors. Rom did a really good job of avoiding the long ball in the minors, but he didn't have such luck against big league hitters, serving up seven bombs in 33.2 frames. The southpaw might be a little interesting if he could find more velocity, but as it stands right now he seems destined to be an up-and-down rotation piece between St. Louis and Triple-A Memphis in 2024.
