Moves back to Triple-A
PLos Angeles Angels  AAA
September 9, 2024
The Angels optioned Crouse to Triple-A Salt Lake on Monday.
ANALYSIS
One day after being recalled from Triple-A, Crouse will head back to Salt Lake to make room in the bullpen for a fresher arm in lefty Jose Suarez, who was called up from the minors in a corresponding move. Crouse tossed 27 pitches and retired four hitters in his relief appearance in Sunday's 7-4 loss to the Rangers, allowing no runs on zero hits and two walks while striking out one.

Stat Review
How does Hans Crouse compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2019
2018
Nobody likes Crouse's delivery -- high-effort, upright and finished with a pronounced head whack -- but he has premium stuff and has yet to go through notable struggles in pro ball. He logged a 23.8 K-BB%, 2.63 FIP and 0.95 WHIP as one of the youngest pitchers in the Northwest League, but his production dipped after a late-season promotion to Low-A. Crouse was still successful at preventing runs, but his strikeout rate fell from 31.1% to 19.7% and his walk rate jumped from 7.3% to 10.5%. He does not generate groundballs at a high clip, so he will need to miss a lot of bats as he climbs the ladder. The 6-foot-4, 180-pound righty's delivery is atypical, but also deceptive, which allows his mid-90s fastball to play up as an elite pitch. His slider has a chance to develop into a second plus offering, while his changeup projects to be closer to a 50-grade pitch. Crouse could be a high-end reliever or a No. 2 starter, depending on how his command develops.
For Arizona League scouts, "Have you seen Hans Crouse?" was a text message they received early and often, as the Rangers' second-round pick from the 2017 draft put up outlandish numbers over 10 abbreviated appearances (six starts). While his 96-99 mph fastball missed bats in and out of the zone, he utilized a potentially plus slider as a second putaway pitch, just for diversity's sake. His changeup is in the nascent stages, but he has several years to refine what is now a clear third offering. Even without a reliable changeup, his advanced command will allow him to have success against most minor-league hitters. The athletic 6-foot-4, 180-pound righty is already the Rangers' best pitching prospect, as he has legitimate frontline upside. Texas was very conservative with where they sent their pitching prospects last season, but Crouse is a uniquely talented arm that could require aggressive promotions in order to be challenged. He held AZL hitters to a .109 average last season, and may not receive a true test until he reaches the Texas League, likely in early 2019.
