Mena was traded to the Cubs on Monday as part of the trade that sent Yu Darvish and Victor Caratini to San Diego, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
A 6-foot-3 outfielder from the Dominican Republic, Mena signed in 2019 for $2 million at the age of 16 and has not yet played in an affiliated league. However, he has a very high ceiling in real life and in fantasy thanks to plus speed and the potential to grow into plus power from the left side. Zach Davies, Reginald Preciado, Owen Caissie and Yeison Santana were also shipped to Chicago in the deal.

2021 Fantasy Outlook
Mena signed with the Padres for $2.2 million during the 2019 J-2 period as a 16-year-old. As can be implied from that type of money, Mena has significant upside thanks to his physical tools. Having just turned 18 in November, Mena is already listed at 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds. While that can lead to awkward swings from the left side of the plate for the time being, Mena is projected to add strength and power to his already strong ability to make contact. Mena also possesses plus speed. That combination of skills was enough to entice the Cubs to trade for Mena as part of the return in the Yu Darvish deal. At his ceiling, Mena could serve as a top of the lineup mainstay for the Cubs for many years. Though he has all the physical tools, there is still significant risk attached to Mena due to his lack of proximity to the big leagues and the fact that he has yet to play at any level of affiliated ball.
