Jason Delay

Jason Delay

29-Year-Old CatcherC
Pittsburgh Pirates AAA
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Delay spent the 2023 season as the Pirates' backup catcher, initially to Austin Hedges and ultimately to Endy Rodriguez. That will be the best-case scenario for him in 2024, as a combination of Rodriguez and Henry Davis is almost certain to account for the majority of plate appearances behind the dish. To dampen Delay's outlook further, the Pirates signed Ali Sanchez to a one-year major league deal early this offseason, leaving him most likely to start the season in the minors. Even if injuries force Delay into a more significant role, he has just a career .078 ISO and .233 batting average across 354 plate appearances in the majors. Read Past Outlooks

Heading back to Triple-A
CPittsburgh Pirates  AAA
June 30, 2024
The Pirates optioned Delay to Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Delay will head back to the minors as the Pirates clear room on the 26-man active roster for fellow catcher Joey Bart (thumb), who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list. During his two-week stay with the Pirates, Delay went 3-for-12 with three doubles, two walks, five RBI and one run.

Stat Review
How does Jason Delay compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Delay was among a rotation of catchers the Pirates used during the 2022 season after trading away Jacob Stallings. He led the team's backstops with 167 plate appearances but was dreadful from an offensive perspective, striking out at a 29.9 percent clip. Delay also had no power to speak of, as illustrated by a .058 ISO. Delay has some defensive value, but that wasn't enough to save his spot on the 40-man roster as he was designated for assignment in November of 2022. Though he remains in the Pirates' organization, Delay shouldn't factor heavily into the team's plans behind the dish in 2023. Even if he does, there won't be any notable production at the plate.

Demotion on tap
CPittsburgh Pirates  AAA
June 30, 2024
Delay no longer has a locker in the Pirates clubhouse and is likely to be demoted ahead of Sunday's series finale in Atlanta, reports Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
ANALYSIS
The 29-year-old was called up in mid-June with Henry Davis and Joey Bart sidelined by a concussion and thumb injury, respectively, but Bart is set to return from the injured list Sunday. Delay missed the first two-plus months of the season while recovering from knee surgery and appeared in seven games during his brief time with the Pirates, going 3-for-15 with three doubles and six RBI. Bart and Yasmani Grandal should split catching duties going forward.
