Notches 12th hold
PSan Diego Padres
August 28, 2024
Estrada allowed one hit in a scoreless inning to notch a hold against the Cardinals on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Estrada handled the seventh inning and needed just eight pitches to retire the side despite giving up a one-out single. The right-hander hadn't picked up a hold since July 26 prior to Tuesday, and he's had a somewhat rough August with a 6.23 ERA and 1.85 WHIP over 10 appearances, though he's also posted a 17:5 K:BB across just 8.2 frames during that span.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Estrada was claimed on waivers by the Padres in November after pitching 10.2 innings with the Cubs in 2023. The results weren't great as Estrada had a 6.75 ERA and 2.25 WHIP while striking out just over a batter-per-inning. Estrada has big strikeout stuff as shown by his 13.72 K/9 at Triple-A, but he's been way to hittable over the last two seasons, especially at the major league level. While Yuki Matsui and Robert Suarez should compete for the Padres' closer role, Estrada will likely be used in middle relief, but has major upside if he ever found his way into a high leverage role due to the strikeouts.
Estrada's a pitcher to keep an eye on in the Cubs' bullpen. He debuted Aug. 30 after pitching to a 1.30 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and nine saves in 34 minor-league appearances between High-A, Double-A and Triple-A. The right-hander showcased high-end stuff and flashed immense strikeout potential in his limited sample in the majors. On the strength of a fastball averaging close to 97 mph and a wipeout slider (58.3 Whiff% on the slider according to Statcast), Estrada punched out eight of the 26 big-league batters he faced, bringing his total to 86 strikeouts in 54 innings across four levels. Now 24 years old, Estrada will look to solidify his spot in the bullpen this spring. He's already on the draft-and-hold radar and could catapult himself into the mixed-league conversation quickly with a strong camp. The closer role is wide open on the North Side.
