Jordyn Adams

24-Year-Old OutfielderOF
Los Angeles Angels
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Considered one of the best athletes in the Angels' system since he was drafted with the 17th pick in the 2017 MLB Draft, Adams had his best minor-league season in 2023 with an .817 OPS, 15 homers and an impressive 44 steals with Triple-A Salt Lake. Those impressive numbers gave him a deserved shot to play in the majors, but he was overmatched in his 17 games with an ugly slash of .128/.125/.128 along with 16 strikeouts in 40 plate appearances. The 24-year-old outfielder is starting to tap into his raw power and possesses 80-grade running ability, but the swing-and-miss is problematic, and that power/speed combo only works so well if he can't make more contact. Adams' talent keeps him worthy of monitoring, but he'll have to take another massive step forward in 2024 if he's going to be more than an up-and-down option. Read Past Outlooks

Getting fourth straight start
OFLos Angeles Angels
September 15, 2024
Adams will start in right field and bat eighth in Sunday's game against the Astros.
ANALYSIS
Adams will pick up his fourth consecutive start in right field and should be in line for a near-everyday role over the final two weeks of the season if Kevin Pillar (thumb) and Bryce Teodosio (finger) are unable to return. Since joining the Angels on Sept. 7 following his promotion from Triple-A Salt Lake, Adams has gone 4-for-16 with a home run, a stolen base, a walk, two RBI and two runs.

Stat Review
How does Jordyn Adams compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a strikeout.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many of a batter’s balls in play go for hits.
  • ISO
Isolated Power. Slugging percentage minus batting average. A computation used to measure a batter's raw power.

  • wOBA
Weighted on-base average. Measures a player's overall offensive contributions per plate appearance. wOBA combines all the different aspects of hitting into one metric, weighting each of them in proportion to their actual run value.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.
  • Barrels/PA
The percentage of plate appearances where a batter had a batted ball classified as a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Expected BA
    Expected Batting Average.
  • Expected SLG
    Expected Slugging Percentage.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2021
2020
2019
Adams has developed exactly as the Angels hoped he would over the past year. His 80-grade speed and elite athleticism have been there the whole time, but he has started utilizing his physical tools more in games. He made several home run robberies while hitting five home runs in 200 at-bats as one of the team's youngest players at the alternate site. Adams cut his groundball rate to a still high 50.6% in 2019 and will need to continue to work on getting the ball in the air going forward. One thing that sets him apart from most two-sport first rounders (No. 17 overall pick in 2018) is that he has always logged high walk rates in pro ball, which will help his case for hitting atop the order some day. He may open his age-21 season at High-A, but could spend the bulk of the year at Double-A if he picks up where he left off in 2020.
Adams has 80-grade speed and a career 11.6 BB% -- skills that could allow him to be a leadoff hitter who steals 30-plus bases annually. As with most two-sport athletes who are bought away from college football scholarships ($4.1 million bonus in 2018), the big unknown is whether Adams will hit enough for the rest of his tools to play. Injuries have limited him to 138 pro games, during which he has hit .259 with a 23.3 K%. His strikeout rate is as good as anyone could have hoped, but he has struggled to get to his above-average raw power (.371 career SLG) and is just 21-for-30 (70%) on stolen-base attempts. After logging unacceptably high groundball rates in 2018, he managed a 50.6 GB% at Low-A, which is still higher than ideal, but manageable for a 20-year-old hitter who is still developing. His baseball skills are still quite raw, but Adams is talented enough that if something clicks, his stock could soar.
The most athletic player in the 2018 draft, Adams was a big-time D-1 wide receiver recruit, but the Angels gave him a $4.1 million bonus (the 12th highest figure in the class), which was sufficient to lure him away from his commitment to UNC. He is an 80-grade runner with plus raw power, but as with many two-sport prep hitters, the development of his hit tool will be what determines his eventual fantasy value. Unfortunately a broken jaw in mid-August ended his season, cutting short a fantastic nine-game run following a promotion to the Pioneer League. His performance in 20 AZL games didn't necessarily warrant a promotion, but the Angels wanted to keep Adams, D'Shawn Knowles and Jeremiah Jackson together, and the latter two needed a challenge. Adams' premium tools give him a chance to have a Jo Adell-esque ascent up prospect rankings in his first full season, but that should be seen as the best-case scenario -- he could also struggle to adjust to Low-A pitching.
