Juan Yepez

26-Year-Old First Baseman1B
Washington Nationals
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Almost immediately upon his MLB return in July, Yepez was batting 2-4 in the Washington lineup, which speaks more to the Nationals' lack of impact bats last season than anything else. To be fair, Yepez hit over .290 in two of his three months in the majors. However, he's not the type of hitter you expect to see in the heart of the order long term. The pressure will be on for him to hit since he's mostly limited to first base and DH at this stage. Yepez showed an improved strikeout rate last season, but he supplied a rather empty batting average with below-average power. The Cardinals previously dumped Yepez and his projected volume for 2025 could go out the window with one poor stretch since he doesn't really provide any defensive value. Read Past Outlooks

1BWashington Nationals
September 25, 2024
Yepez is absent from the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Andres Chaparro (personal) is away on paternity leave, but Luis Garcia will get another start at designated hitter, which leaves no room in the lineup for Yepez. Yepez had started seven of the previous eight contests, although he's seen his playing time drop in September on the whole.

Stat Review
How does Juan Yepez compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • BB/K
    Walk to strikeout ratio
  • BB Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a walk.
  • K Rate
The percentage of plate appearances resulting in a strikeout.

  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Hard Hit Rate
A measure of contact quality from Sports Info Solutions. This stat explains what percentage of batted balls were hit hard vs. medium or soft.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
2022
Fresh off a 28-homer showing between the majors and minors, Yepez looked a year ago at this time like he could eventually slot into the middle part of the Cardinals' batting order. He had quite a fall in 2023, though, spending the overwhelming majority of his season back at Triple-A Memphis where he managed just a .736 OPS and nine home runs over 86 contests. The Cards non-tendered Yepez after the season even as he was not yet eligible for salary arbitration. He managed to land in a much more favorable situation for playing time when he inked a minor-league contract with the Nationals. Yepez is not on the 40-man roster and has options remaining, so he's not guaranteed anything. Still, the Nats haven't exactly set up roadblocks at the positions Yepez can play, so he could get a shot. At this point, the 26-year-old is more of a name to monitor in deeper formats.
Yepez made his MLB debut in 2022 and had a solid rookie campaign with a .253/.296/.447 slash line, 12 home runs and 30 RBI in 76 games. He filled a part-time role and saw action at first base, third base, designated hitter and both corner outfield spots, though he's not strong in the field. The retirement of Albert Pujols opens up a significant chunk of playing time, and Yepez could slot into that spot at designated hitter in 2023 depending on the Cardinals' offseason moves. His 22.3 percent strikeout rate is manageable, but he'll need to improve upon the 5.9 percent walk rate to maintain a consistent spot in the lineup.
Yepez has some Quad-A qualities, but after slashing .289/.382/.589 at Triple-A and .302/.388/.640 in the Arizona Fall League, he is also a trendy sleeper heading into the season. Given that he made contact at a solid clip (18.6 K%) and took his walks (11.7 BB%), there's reason to expect him to hold his own against big-league pitching. Still, it's dangerous to read too much into what a 23-year-old first baseman/designated hitter does in the upper levels of the minors. His pull-heavy approach and middling 27.1 Hard% are added reasons for pessimism. He needs to be close to the best realistic version of himself to earn playing time at those positions. Given that he is on the 40-man roster, Yepez could get the first crack at designated hitter duties this year if the National League gets the DH.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Time may be up in St. Louis
1BSt. Louis Cardinals
July 14, 2023
Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat speculated Friday the Cardinals could deal Yepez ahead of the Aug. 1 trade deadline.
ANALYSIS
The 25-year-old had a solid rookie campaign last year with a .743 OPS and 12 homers in 76 games, but he's been unable to carve out significant playing time in 2023. Yepez has a .214/.283/.381 slash line in 46 big-league plate appearances and has struggled at Triple-A Memphis as well with a .637 OPS in 37 games. He likely won't enter the offseason with any guarantees of retaining his spot on the 40-man roster, so the Cardinals could try to get what they can for him now via trade.
