2024 Fantasy Outlook
Gausman has established himself as one of the game's best starting pitchers on the strength of his trademark splitter. His first season with Toronto in 2022 was a rousing success even as he endured some tough luck on balls in play. He followed up with an even better campaign at age 32, leading the American League in strikeouts with 237 while finishing seventh among qualified starters with a 3.16 ERA. The four-seam fastball that sets up his split-finger was more effective last season, and while there was some giveback with his walk rate, Gausman was still stingy in that regard (second in K-BB% behind only Spencer Strider). His early-career struggles between Baltimore, Atlanta and Cincinnati are a distant memory at this point and the team context is a check mark in his favor even in the AL East. Read Past Outlooks
Goes seven innings in no-decision
Gausman allowed two runs on nine hits and two walks over seven frames during a no-decision Friday. He struck out three in the extra-innings win over St. Louis.
ANALYSIS
Gausman got off to a rocky start, giving up four straight singles to begin the contest, leading to two Cardinal runs. He didn't allow another run after that frame and, at one point, retired 11 straight batters. He's struck out five or fewer batters in seven of his last eight starts, resulting in a disappointing 36:19 K:BB over 50.1 innings. Gausman is sporting a 4.02 ERA with a 153:52 K:BB through 170 innings this season. He's currently in line for a road start against the Rangers next week.

After signing a five-year, $110 million contract with the Blue Jays last winter, Gausman had to pay his toll to the BABIP Gods. He did so in the form of a .363 BABIP, which inflated his numbers well beyond where they probably "should" have been. In fact, Gausman had the second-best FIP among all qualified starters at 2.38, trailing only Carlos Rodon. The split-finger pitch is what helped Gausman take his career to the next level, and it's not usual for splitter-slider pitchers to see a good deal of BABIP variance though Gausman is not a particularly heavy groundball pitcher. Gausman shaved his walk rate to a career-low 3.9% and the surface stats seem destined to get in line with the skills in short order. He will look for better results at Rogers Centre (4.57 ERA last season).

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Struggling with fastball
Opposing batters are hitting .322 against Gausman's four-seam fastball through seven starts this season.
ANALYSIS
The 33-year-old has a 3.78 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 31:8 K:BB across 33.1 innings, and those numbers are fortunate given the problems with his fastball, which he's thrown at a 47.4 percent clip. Gausman's splitter, which has 38.8 percent usage, has been dominant, as hitters have a .243 wOBA and two-degree launch angle against it. The right-hander has also introduced a sinker this season, but he appears to still be feeling it out since it's been thrown just 23 times. Gausman's already solid numbers could receive a bump if he's able to use the sinker more and rely less on his fastball.
