2024 Fantasy Outlook
Finnegan was 14th in the majors with a career-high 28 saves for the Nationals, which represented a 66.7% team save share. The 32-year-old pitched a career-high 69.1 innings, but he may have run out of gas down the stretch as he posted a 7.63 ERA and 1.89 WHIP over the last month-and-a-half. His performance otherwise (2.55 ERA, 1.11 WHIP) was solid and he was Washington's highest leveraged reliever per WPA (1.88) and gmLI (1.90). Finnegan still relied heavily on his upper-90's fastball (70% usage), but he threw more split fingers (24.8%) since it was his most successful pitch (.167 BAA, 35.3% whiff) last year. However, the right-hander produced a career-worst strikeout rate (21.7%) and permitted 11 home runs (17.7% HR/FB%). With the Nationals playing more competitive ball, they may turn to a reliever with more upside for ninth inning duties. They have a few internal options (Harvey, Rainey), so don't be surprised if Finnegan gets fewer save opportunities in 2024. Read Past Outlooks

ANALYSIS
Finnegan will enter free agency after spending the last five years with the Nationals. He registered a 3.68 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 60:24 K:BB over 63.2 innings in 2024, and Finnegan's 38 saves were a career high and third-most in the majors behind Ryan Helsley and Emmanuel Clase. Coming off his first All-Star appearance, the 33-year-old Finnegan should draw plenty of interest from teams looking to add a closer to its bullpen.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
2021
Finnegan's 2022 season was basically a carbon copy of the year prior with some slight improvements. For starters, he added velocity on his sinker, a pitch he threw 79% of the time at 97 mph on average, compared to 95.6 mph in 2021. This yielded a career-best 26.1% strikeout rate, while his walk rate dropped a few percentage points to 8.2%. Finnegan also established career marks with a 1.14 WHIP, six wins and 14 holds, while tying a career high with 11 saves after Nationals' closer Tanner Rainey had season-ending Tommy John surgery. He maintained his reverse splits, performing better against lefty swingers (.185 BA since 2020) compared to right-handed batters (.273). Washington is very clearly in rebuild mode, so don't count on many save chances after the team finished with a league-low 28 saves in 2022. However, if Finnegan maintains the closer role in 2023 and holds it all season, he makes for a fine CL2.
After finally debuting when he was 28 years old on 2020, Finnegan began the season in the Nationals bullpen, collecting 11 holds in his first 40 innings despite walking 21 batters, fueling a 1.50 WHIP. Finnegan minimized damage with 44 punch outs and only four homers allowed in that span, generating a 3.37 ERA. The Nationals dealt Brad Hand and gave ninth inning duties to Finnegan. He responded with 11 saves in 14 chances, adding two more holds. His WHIP was similar, but 5 homers in his last 26 innings pushed his ERA to 3.83 in that span. His 3.55 season long ERA was a run lower that the various estimators. Even so, as the incumbent, Finnegan has the inside track to return as Washington's closer, though his career 11.7% BB% suggests his job security wouldn't be very high, and he'll need to beat out Tanner Rainey, Steve Cishek and Sean Doolittle for the job.
Finnegan had a breakout year in the minors in 2019, which he credited to lowering his arm slot. He finally got his chance at the major-league level in 2020 and pitched well, with a 25.2 K% leading to a .226 BAA. The right-hander is no spring chicken at 29 years old, and walks remain an issue, so it would be a surprise if he leapfrogged a handful of other capable arms in the Nationals' bullpen.

Massive asking price
PWashington Nationals
July 30, 2024
According to Mark Feinsand of MLB.com, the Nationals are "asking the moon" in trade returns for Finnegan.
ANALYSIS
Despite blowing a four-run lead Monday against the Diamondbacks, the right-hander is one of the top relievers on the market with 28 saves and a 3.48 ERA through 46 appearances this year. Finnegan will have his final year of arbitration eligibility in 2025, and the Nationals are trying to take advantage of the sellers' market at the deadline.
