2019 Fantasy Outlook
As a 17-year-old in the Dominican Summer League, Nunez had the highest wRC+ (238) in affiliated baseball. Obviously his .437 BABIP was partially responsible, but it was still quite the feat for a player the Cardinals signed for $300,000 out of Cuba in 2018. He is already pretty hefty (5-foot-11, 205 pounds) for a teenage baseball player, which is why he didn't net a significantly bigger bonus on the open market. However, he hit just as many line drives (43) as groundballs (43) and had almost as many walks (26) as strikeouts (29) in 199 PA at an age-appropriate level, so his offensive potential is certainly intriguing. DSL statistics are fraught with complications -- it is where the youngest, rawest players are assigned -- so we should be careful not to overreact to his debut. It should also be noted that he seems unlikely to end up at third base and may follow a Willie Calhoun-esque path to the majors, where nobody is quite sure where to play him in the field.
