Max Meyer

25-Year-Old PitcherSP
Miami Marlins
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Meyer made his long-awaited return from Tommy John surgery and pitched extremely well to begin last season before the Marlins pumped the brakes. They sent him down to Triple-A and moved him to a 3-to-4 inning regimen, carefully managing his workload. Meyer, the third overall pick in 2020, failed to recapture the same magic later in the year, going 1-5 with a 7.20 ERA and 1.68 WHIP in 40 innings following his return to the majors. Miami regularly turned him loose for 90-plus pitches down the stretch, so perhaps the kid gloves are off. His slider was extremely effective and his velocity was close to pre-surgery levels. Meyer could head back to the minors to begin 2025, but the right-hander will get another extended audition in the rotation soon enough. Read Past Outlooks

The Marlins placed Meyer on the 15-day injured list Saturday with right shoulder bursitis.
ANALYSIS
Meyer was originally slated to make his next start Sunday against Philadelphia. However, his move to the IL will keep him sidelined for multiple turns through the rotation, meaning the 25-year-old righty likely only has one or two starts left in the season, even in a best-case scenario. The Marlins have yet to name a replacement for Meyer in their starting rotation.

Stat Review
How does Max Meyer compare to other starting pitchers?
This section compares his stats with all starting pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 120 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 120 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.
  • BB/9
    Average walks per nine innings.
  • HR/9
Average home runs allowed per nine innings.
  • Fastball
    Average fastball velocity.
  • ERA
Earned run average. The average earned runs allowed per nine innings.
  • WHIP
Walks plus hits per inning pitched.
  • BABIP
Batting average on balls in play. Measures how many balls in play against a pitcher go for hits.
  • GB/FB
Groundball to flyball ratio. The higher the number, the more likely a pitcher is to induce groundballs.
  • Left On Base
The percentage of base runners that a pitcher strands on base over the course of a season.
  • Exit Velocity
The speed of the baseball as it comes off the bat, immediately after a batter makes contact.
  • Barrels/BBE
The percentage of batted ball events resulting in a Barrel. A Barrel is a batted ball with similar exit velocity and launch angle to past ones that led to a minimum .500 batting average and 1.500 slugging percentage.
  • Spin Rate
Spin Rate is the rate of spin on a baseball after it is released. It is measured in revolutions per minute (rpm).
  • Balls Hit 95+ MPH
The percentage of batted balls hit that met or exceeded the 95 MPH threshold.
  • Swinging Strike

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2021
Meyer's eventual role is to be determined, but he should be a valuable fantasy commodity as long as he stays healthy. The 6-foot righty underwent Tommy John surgery in August of 2022, just a few weeks after making his big-league debut. He is set to be fully healthy this spring and should compete for a spot in the Opening Day rotation. If Meyer were to struggle with a starter's workload over the next year or two, he has the stuff to excel in the ninth inning, and that might even be a preferable long-term outcome for those in roto dynasty leagues. He has excellent movement on his mid-90s fastball and one of the best sliders in pro ball, so it's not hard to envision him being one of the best closers in the game if he went down that path. Meyer also sports a decent third-pitch changeup and good enough command to start, it'll just come down to the workload. Dating back to his time at Minnesota, Meyer's one year logging over 80 innings was in 2021, when he tossed 111 innings in the minors.
Meyer will miss the entire 2023 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in August of 2022. Fortunately for him, he got to the majors and onto the 40-man roster before suffering the injury, but he only pitched six innings in the big leagues. Meyer leaned heavily on his plus-plus 89-mph slider and also threw his mid-90s four-seamer 40 percent of the time. His above-average changeup rounds out a full starter's pitch mix. The six-foot righty has generally thrown enough strikes to comfortably project as a starter, but he has not yet proved he can handle a starter's workload. Meyer threw 111 innings in 2021 and was limited to 67 innings in 2022 due to the injury. He will be 20 months removed from the procedure when spring training 2024 rolls around, and it's possible Meyer comes back as good or better than ever, although roughly 20% of pitchers fail to return to pre-TJS heights.
Meyer was excellent in his pro debut, logging a 2.27 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 130:42 K:BB in 111 innings, with 20 starts coming at Double-A and two starts at Triple-A. His groundball rate was around 50% and his strikeout rate improved as the season went on -- he struck out 72 batters in 51 innings over his final 10 starts. His low-to-mid-90s fastball and diving slider remain plus pitches, but he didn't take any steps forward with his third-pitch changeup, which is mildly disappointing. His command/control remain solid, but not much better than when he was drafted third overall in 2020. It's kind of a conundrum with Meyer, because he performed very well statistically while getting thrown in the deep end for his pro debut, but the scouting reports are slightly less glowing than they were a year ago. If he can put in some work this offseason and in spring training to make minor improvements across the board, Meyer could take a step forward as a potential No. 2 starter, but as things stand, he's got the command and wipeout slider to perform as a mid-rotation arm in a year or two.
Meyer's 70-grade slider was the best pitch in last year's draft, and his upper-90s fastball (which touches 100) might have been the second best pitch in the class, which led to Miami selecting him third overall. His slider gets up into the low-90s and has devastating late movement out of the zone. His third-pitch changeup is improving and will inevitably play up due to how exceptional his top two pitches are. The University of Minnesota product worked as the closer as a freshman and transitioned to the rotation in 2019, so he does not have the mileage on his arm of a typical premium college pitcher. A good athlete with a low-effort delivery, Meyer had a 6.6 percent walk rate over the last two seasons, so he has a lot of starter traits. His 6-foot, 185-pound frame is a slight knock, but the main question is whether he can hold up under a starter's workload. He faired well at the alternate training site.

Working on pitch mix
PMiami Marlins
April 30, 2024
Meyer is focusing on relying less on his slider while pitching in Triple-A Jacksonville's rotation, according to Christina De Nicola of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
The right-hander made early season starts for Miami and flashed his potential with a 2.12 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 14:3 K:BB over 17 innings, but he was sent to Triple-A in an attempt to manage his workload. The 25-year-old relied heavily on his slider with 49 percent usage while up with the Marlins, but the organization now wants him to focus on improving his four-seamer and changeup. It's only a matter of time before Meyer rejoins Miami's rotation this season, and he could be set up for more sustained success if he can fine-tune his other offerings beyond the slider.
