San Francisco Giants
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Bailey won his first Gold Glove last season for his stellar work behind the plate. He seemed to take a small step forward at the plate, too, even if the surface-level numbers wouldn't necessarily point to that. Bailey cut his strikeout rate from 28.3 percent to 22.3 percent while upping his walk rate (5.9 percent to 8.7 percent), hard-hit rate (38.4 percent to 43 percent) and average exit velocity (88.7 mph to 91.3 mph). The switch-hitting catcher cratered after the All-Star break for the second straight year and is now a career .179/.238/.238 hitter in the second half (versus a .287/.343/.454 line in the first half). While that might suggest more days off would be wise, you can understand why the Giants have been reluctant to take the defensive stalwart out of the lineup. One concern with Bailey is that he's already made three trips to the 7-day concussion injured list, including two in the first half last season. That batted-ball data points to more offensive promise that Bailey has shown so far, but he also might just be a better real-life player than fantasy player. Read Past Outlooks

Rare steal in win
CSan Francisco Giants
September 28, 2024
Bailey went 1-for-3 with two RBI, one stolen base and one run scored in Saturday's 6-5 win over the Cardinals.
ANALYSIS
Bailey has gone 12-for-43 (.279) with three extra-base hits and four RBI over his last 14 games. His steal Saturday was his fourth of the year and his first since July 22. The catcher has put together a middling year at the plate, slashing .234/.298/.339 with eight home runs, 46 RBI, 46 runs scored, 16 doubles and a triple over 121 contests. While he hasn't hit all that well, Bailey's elite pitch framing and arm have made him an essential part of the Giants' roster.

How does Patrick Bailey compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Bailey slashed an uninspiring .225/.342/.419 at the High-A level in 2022 and entered the 2023 campaign behind Joey Bart and Roberto Perez, among others, on the Giants' catching depth chart. Needless to say, he didn't really seem to be on the fantasy radar heading into last season. As it turned out, he was promoted before the end of May and made a terrific first impression in batting .322/.347/.557 with five homers over his first 33 major-league contests. Although he continued to provide excellent defense, Bailey crashed hard at the plate the rest of the way with a .503 OPS and 29.1 percent strikeout rate from July on. A 10 percent barrel rate was nice to see, but Bailey's strikeout and walk rates were both in the 17th percentile and the switch-hitter sported just a .557 OPS against righties. His defense should provide job security, but Bailey should be reserved only for two-catcher leagues in fantasy.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Everyday role won't change
CSan Francisco Giants
September 5, 2023
Manager Gabe Kapler said the Giants plan to start Bailey "as much as he's physically capable of playing" over the final month of the season, reports Evan Webeck of the San Jose Mercury News.
ANALYSIS
The 24-year-old has served as San Francisco's primary backstop since making his MLB debut in May, and he'll continue to be leaned on heavily down the stretch as the Giants push for a playoff spot, though he's not starting Tuesday versus the Cubs. Bailey's .696 OPS and 27.7 strikeout rate are nothing special at first sight, but a 92 wRC+ is impressive from a rookie catcher, especially since he's a plus defender behind the plate. Blake Sabol will continue to see occasional starts over the next few weeks, but it's clear Bailey will be catching as much as possible.
