R.J. Alaniz

Last season was a special one for Alaniz as he received a callup to the majors for the first time after toiling in the minors since 2010. However, his brief stint in the big leagues was largely a mess as he posted a 9.19 ERA (5.38 FIP) in 15.2 innings between Seattle and Cincinnati. The right-hander has some strikeout ability -- he whiffed 54 batters in 40.1 Triple-A innings last season -- but struggles with his command and control, posting a 4.0 BB/9 in those frames. The walk rate was nearly identical to the mark he posted in the majors, but he was much less effective at striking out big-league hitters as his strikeout rate dropped to 18.3%. With such a small sample size, it's difficult to predict how his stuff will play in the majors. There's no guarantee that Alaniz will get another chance to prove his worth as he was removed from the Reds' 40-man roster in December.
