2024 Fantasy Outlook
After an impressive debut in the States in 2022, Suarez declined his $5 million player option last November and became a free agent. A few days later, the right-hander signed a five-year contract with the Padres, as the team clearly thought highly of him to pay him $10 million per season. Unfortunately, Suarez missed the entire first half of 2023 while recovering from severe elbow inflammation. The soon-to-be 33-year-old made his season debut right after the All-Star break and slid right back into setup duties. Suarez would only pitch 27.2 innings across 26 appearances, however, as he also missed 10 games for the alleged use of a foreign substance. Suarez wound up compiling four wins, nine holds and a 0.90 WHIP for San Diego last year and figures to have a leg up for closing duties in 2024. Read Past Outlooks
Blows save but earns win
Suarez (9-3) allowed a run on one hit over one inning, taking a blown save but earning the extra-inning win over the Giants on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Suarez surrendered a game-tying home run to Heliot Ramos in the bottom of the ninth inning, but the Padres were able to regain the lead in the 10th. This was Suarez's fifth blown save of the campaign, two of which have come over his last three outings. He's now at a 2.59 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 54:14 K:BB with 32 saves across 59 innings as the Padres' closer this year. His recent slip-ups don't appear to be putting his role in danger yet.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
After pitching in Japan for five seasons, Suarez underwent a bit of an adjustment period in his transition to MLB. The 31-year-old compiled a 4.66 ERA over his first month pitching in the States, but ultimately turned in a fantastic season overall. The rookie right-hander posted a 32% strikeout rate, 2.27 ERA (2.99 SIERA) and 1.05 WHIP across 47.2 innings but was limited to 45 appearances due to a knee injury that required a clean-up procedure in June. Suarez missed two months of action, but he was particularly sharp upon his return, striking out 32 over his final 24.1 innings. He did not allow an earned run at Petco Park all year and established himself as the primary setup man for the Padres. Suarez should maintain that role in 2023, but closing may be in his future after San Diego re-signed him to a five-year, $46 million deal. He'll need to cut down on his walks (11%) to take that next step.
