Headed to Chicago in Cease deal

The Padres traded Zavala, Drew Thorpe, Jairo Iriarte and Steven Wilson to the White Sox on Wednesday in exchange for Dylan Cease, Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Zavala slashed .267/.420/.451 with 14 homers and 71 RBI last season at Single-A while also stealing 20 bags. However, he went just 4-for-51 at the plate upon being promoted to High-A in late August. Clearly, the 19-year-old outfielder has plenty of work to do yet in the minors, but the tools are there for Zavala to develop into a solid big-leaguer in the future.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
For the third offseason in a row, the top traits to point to with Zavala are his command of the zone and youth relative to the average age of the pitchers he faced. He slashed .267/.420/.451 with 14 home runs and 20 steals in 101 games primarily as an 18-year-old at Single-A before falling flat (.078 AVG, 33.9 K%) in 14 games at High-A. The lefty-hitting outfielder has solid to above-average tools across the board, but he probably won't have better than average game power or average speed by the time he's in the majors. He will always be better in OBP leagues than AVG leagues, as his ability to draw walks is arguably his most tangible skill. He should return to High-A and could reach Double-A by the time he turns 20 in July. If it all works out, he could be an Ian Happ type of outfielder who is always in demand but never valued as a true cornerstone of a fantasy roster.
Zavala has been known as one of the best pure hitters in his class since he signed as a 16-year-old out of Venezuela in 2020. He was the youngest hitter to get 100-plus plate appearances at Single-A last season and did more than just tread water, slashing .254/.355/.508 with seven home runs, five steals, a 13.5 BB% and a 26.2 K% in 141 PA. Given his age, he could have been forgiven for struggling, but he was 18% better than league average and got to a surprising amount of power (.254 ISO) for this stage of his career. Zavala can play center field now, but he gets by more on good instincts than blazing speed, and the same goes for his success on the bases. It's Zavala's pretty left-handed swing and knack for barelling balls that will get him to the majors. His raw tools don't scream top prospect, but his bat might be special enough for him to steadily climb rankings in his age-18/19 season.
