Spencer Jones

23-Year-Old OutfielderOF
New York Yankees AA
2024 Fantasy Outlook
A 6-foot-6 left-handed slugger with long strides on the bases and in the outfield, Jones' hit tool will be the swing skill. He has been handled with kid gloves since the Yankees selected him with the No. 25 overall pick in 2022, never getting an aggressive assignment and only playing 17 games at Double-A to close out his age-22 season. He had a 29 percent strikeout rate at High-A and a 28.2 percent strikeout rate at Double-A. Jones hasn't shown pronounced lefty/righty splits, so he will either be an everyday player who hits for 30-plus homer power with 10-20 steals or he won't hit enough to play regularly in the majors. He profiles best in left field, which puts even more pressure on his bat. Given his age (turns 23 in May), he won't get the benefit of the doubt if he struggles in a return to Double-A. Makes season debut

Jones (neck) played his first game of the season for Double-A Somerset on Saturday, going 2-for-3 with one walk, one double, three runs and one RBI.
ANALYSIS
Jones missed the first seven contests of the campaign for Somerset due to a stiff neck, but he didn't appear to be hampered by the issue in his return to the lineup. The 22-year-old was tabbed to begin the season at the Double-A level after an impressive spring training with the Yankees, but he could get his first taste of Triple-A ball in short order if he continues to perform well. Jones is among the organization's top prospects and could make his MLB debut sometime this season.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
The Yankees continued their trend of taking lefty-hitting college bats, selecting Jones with the 25th overall pick in last year's draft. Being listed at 6-foot-7, 225 pounds and having posted mammoth exit velocities as an amateur, Jones was a natural fit with the Yankees. Unfortunately, now we have to deal with the lazy left-handed Aaron Judge comparisons. Jones is a good athlete for his size and has advanced power to the opposite field. He slashed .325/.411/.494 with a 10.5 BB%, 18.9 K%, three home runs and 10 steals in 22 games at Single-A, and is already making waves with his batted-ball data. According to Prospects Live, his 90th percentile exit velocity was elite. Jones wouldn't have been available where the Yankees selected him if there weren't hit tool concerns, but his fantasy upside is so high and his pro debut was so strong that it's worth rolling the dice on Jones in the first round of first-year player drafts.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
No longer untouchable
OFNew York Yankees  AA
July 22, 2024
The Yankees are now willing to include Jones in potential trade packages for Garrett Crochet or Tarik Skubal, reports Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
ANALYSIS
New York was unwilling to include the 23-year-old in a deal for Dylan Cease during the offseason, but that outlook has apparently shifted with the summer deadline approaching. Jones is in his first full season at the Double-A level this year and has a .238/.317/.401 slash line and alarming 36.9 percent strikeout rate through 76 games. Crochet and Skubal are the best arms rumored to be available at the deadline, and it remains to be seen if Jones would be included in a trade for anything less than an elite asset with multiple years of team control.
