Thomas Saggese

Thomas Saggese

22-Year-Old Second Baseman2B
St. Louis Cardinals
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Part of the Cardinals' return from Texas for Jordan Montgomery, Saggese went on a summer-long heater at Double-A before finally cooling down after a late-season promotion to Triple-A. He hit .351/.424/.653 with 20 home runs, six steals and a 22.9 K% in 285 at-bats from June 10 through Sept. 7. Saggese (pronounced soo-JAY-see) is a career .298 hitter in the minors and has a classic bat-first second baseman profile. He looks to do damage early in counts and will probably be better in batting average leagues than OBP leagues. He is a fringe-average runner but was on base enough to steal 12 bags on 14 attempts in 139 games. If he can hit around .280 with 20 home runs, Saggese should provide enough value to justify everyday playing time in spite of his fringe-average defense. If not, he'll likely move around the field as a bench bat and injury replacement. Saggese, who turns 22 in April, should head to Triple-A for at least a couple months, as he is not on the 40-man roster. Read Past Outlooks

Saggese is not in the lineup for Monday's game against the Pirates, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
ANALYSIS
Saggese had started each of the first six games for the Cardinals upon his promotion from Triple-A Memphis, but he'll grab a seat Monday as the Pirates send Paul Skenes to the mound. Masyn Winn and Brendan Donovan will form the St. Louis middle infield in the series opener.

Stat Review
How does Thomas Saggese compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Saggese didn't do much over the first month of the season, but he hit .334/.382/.558 with 14 home runs, 10 steals, a 17.9 K% and a 7.0 BB% in the final 79 games, primarily at High-A. A second baseman who turns 21 in April, Saggese probably won't end up with any plus tools (we'll see how his hit and power develop), but his recent track record of hitting is so strong that he merits attention in dynasty leagues in case the breakout was real. He should return to Double-A, where he had a homer and two doubles in five games to close 2022.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Playing time prioritized
2BSt. Louis Cardinals
August 28, 2024
The Cardinals elected to keep Saggese at Triple-A Memphis for the time being in order to prioritize playing every day, reports John Denton of MLB.com.
ANALYSIS
Nolan Gorman has served as St. Louis' primary second baseman this season, but he was demoted Aug. 21. It seemed like a prime opportunity for Saggese to be promoted since he's the organization's top infield prospect in the upper minors, but the Cardinals have instead turned to Brendan Donovan at the keystone. Saggese has an .867 OPS with 10 homers in 44 games at Triple-A since the start of July and could still make his MLB debut before the end of the campaign, but for now he'll remain with Memphis.
