Erik Halterman looks at players whose stock is rising or falling, starting with the Cubs' Seiya Suzuki, who has done well so far in his transition to MLB.
This week, Erik Halterman's Barometer focuses on a small number of things that have bearing on a player's fantasy value vs. outliers from only a few games of play, beginning with Alex Bregman in Houston.
In this week’s column, Erik Halterman talks about Shane McClanahan, who has been excellent over his last 10 starts, pitching more innings than previously and with an ERA of 3.07.
2021 Fantasy Outlook
Mercedes didn't see much action in 2020, failing to reach base in his lone plate appearances for the White Sox. The backstop did put together an impressive season in 2019 at Triple-A, slashing .310/.386/.647 with 17 home runs and 62 RBI in just 53 contests. While his 19.1 K% is undoubtedly a cause for concern, it's a common occurrence for power hitters to strike out at a higher rate, and there shouldn't be many questions about Mercedes power stroke after the 2019 campaign. The 27-year-old will have a chance to compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster heading into 2021, and he'll likely need to beat out Zack Collins for the backup catching job if he's to start the season in the big leagues. It seems more likely that Mercedes could be a mid-to-late-season call-up, barring any significant injuries to either Collins or Yasmani Grandal.
