Fred VanVleet

30-Year-Old GuardG
Houston Rockets
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Though he's made just one All-Star game, VanVleet has been a top-30 fantasy talent for half a decade. That didn't change last season despite the point guard moving from Toronto to Houston in free agency. He was able to pull back his scoring burden and focus on being a floor general for the up-and-coming Rockets. That resulted in a five-year scoring low (17.4 PPG), but VanVleet registered a career-high 8.1 assists with just 1.7 turnovers and reached a true-shooting career high of 56.8 percent. That was in addition to his quality defensive numbers (1.4 steals and 0.8 blocks) despite being listed at only six feet tall. Houston added even more young talent this summer, selecting guard Reed Sheppard with the No. 3 overall pick. That's in addition to other scorers or playmakers like Jalen Green, Amen Thompson and Cam Whitmore. It's possible coach Ime Udoka has the 30-year-old VanVleet slightly pull back his role again to help facilitate the futures of the franchise, especially with FVV having averaged over 36 minutes per game in four straight seasons. Either way, he's a bit of an injury risk given the excessive minutes, age and having cracked 70 games just twice in his career (73 last year). A downward trend is more likely than an upward one, but that doesn't mean fantasy managers should avoid him if he's available in the third round. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Fredderick Edmond VanVleet is the son of Susan VanVleet and step-father Joe Danforth. He was born in 1994 in Rockford, Illinois, where he played four years of high school ball at Auburn High School. After his senior year, he was named a 2012 All-State First Team member by both the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicago Tribune. VanVleet then attended Wichita State for college, where he majored in sociology. The fiesty guard has three brothers and two sisters. Each year, VanVleet returns to Rockford to host the FVV Fan Fest to raise funds for the RACVB Charitable Foundation. He also hosts a basketball camp for Rockford youth and donates Thanksgiving meals to Rockford families in need. Learn more about him on both Instagram and Twitter (@FredVanVleet). From 2012 to 2016, Fred VanVleet played four seasons of college basketball for Wichita State. After playing 141 career games (102 starts) for the Shockers, FVV left the school as the all-time leader in assists (637), steals (225) and assist-to-turnover ratio (3.08). VanVleet tied a school and Missouri Valley Conference record by participating in 120 career victories, including three straight 30-win seasons (2012-15). The Shockers qualified for the NCAA Tournament in all four of VanVleet's years at Wichita State. During FVV's tenure, the Shockers won three MVC titles and nine NCAA tourney games. VanVleet twice won MVC Player of the Year (2014, 2016) and was named to the All-MVC First Team squad three times (2014, 2015, 2016). During his 2015-16 senior season, VanVleet averaged 12.2 points, 5.5 assists, 3.2 rebounds, 1.8 steals and 1.4 made threes per game. VanVleet was not selected in the 2016 NBA Draft, but he featured for the Raptors' Summer League team, stayed all the way through training camp, and was among the 15 players named for the active roster at the start of the 2016-17 campaign.

Team-high 26 points in loss
GHouston Rockets
November 18, 2024
VanVleet racked up 26 points (9-23 FG, 3-11 3Pt, 5-5 FT), six rebounds, five assists, one block and one steal across 35 minutes during Monday's 101-100 loss to the Bucks.
ANALYSIS
VanVleet led the Rockets with a team high in points while stuffing the stat sheet Monday. However, the 30-year-old struggled from beyond the arc, where he has shot 33.3 percent across his last five outings. Despite shooting woes from outside, VanVleet has provided double-digit points, five-plus rebounds and five or more assists across each of his last five games.

After establishing himself as an elite point guard in Toronto, VanVleet opted to sign with the Rockets for the upcoming season. He is coming off three straight seasons in which he ended inside the top 20 in standard formats. The 2022-23 campaign saw him averaging 19.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, 7.2 assists, 1.8 steals and 3.1 three-pointers in 36.8 minutes per game. While he has been a consistent second-round asset, his playing time has typically exceeded 36 minutes per night over the past few years, factoring into his fantasy value. His playing time is almost certainly going to be reduced in Houston, a fact that should not be lost on fantasy managers. Fewer minutes may result in a slight reduction in production, landing him toward the end of the second round, or even the early third round. However, by lightening the load on a nightly basis, there is a chance he will play in more than 70 games for the first time in recent memory, boosting his total value. As an elite contributor on both ends of the floor, VanVleet's projected value should hold steady for at least another couple of years.
The 2021-22 season presented a changing of the guard for the Raptors after Kyle Lowry departed for the Heat. They turned the backcourt over to VanVleet, who had already proven to be a valuable running mate when Lowry was still in town. He took his game to another level with Lowry gone, averaging career-highs in points (20.3), rebounds (4.4), assists (6.7) and three-pointers (3.7) per game. For those who play in leagues that count turnovers, he was also an asset in that area by averaging just 2.6 of them per game. That's nothing for a player who has the ball in his hands as much as VanVleet does. The Raptors were extremely deep at forward, but their limited options behind VanVleet at the guard spot contributed to him averaging a whopping 38 minutes per game. The Raptors made no significant additions at guard during the offseason. Scottie Barnes is an excellent passing forward, so he'll likely be asked to continue to help VanVleet facilitate the offense for his teammates. However, with his hefty playing time and leading role, VanVleet comes with an incredibly high floor in fantasy.
Fred VanVleet could be the man this season for the Raptors. With Kyle Lowry in Miami and Pascal Siakam suffering from shoulder surgery, the burden of leading the Raptors into battle probably falls on the 27-year-old guard. FVV's five year history with Toronto demonstrates he's ready for the task at hand. VanVleet has improved his points and rebounds in each of his five seasons, and his assists were on a four-year climb until last season's slight dip. The Wichita State product is coming off a 2020-21 season in which he posted career-highs in per-game points (19.2), rebounds (4.2), blocks (0.7) and made threes (3.3), plus shot a career-best 88.5 percent from the charity stripe. His 6.3 assists and 1.7 steals were rather useful, too. The only concern was his field goal percentage, which dipped to a four-year low of 38.9 percent. That field goal percentage may continue to stay low considering Toronto's other main scoring options are Goran Dragic, Gary Trent and Siakam. Siakam is expected back by mid-November, but like Dragic, he's a candidate to be traded if the Raptors go into rebuild mode. While VanVleet could be facing additional double teams, his arrow continues to point up. Expect a third straight season of 35-plus minutes per game, wonderful counting stats, and possibly a career-first All-Star appearance from the 6-foot-1 guard.
With Kawhi Leonard leaving the Raptors for the Clippers, VanVleet took on an expanded role in a contract year. The combo guard averaged 17.6 points, 6.6 assists, 3.8 rebounds, 2.7 threes and 1.9 steals in 35.7 minutes, causing his fantasy stock to rise significantly. In 2018-19, VanVleet ranked 140th (per-game, eight-category), and he upped his rank to 30th in 2019-20. The 26-year-old opted to remain with the Raptors on a four-year, $85 million deal during free agency. In 2020-21, he could expand his role even more, as the Raptors lost both Marc Gasol and Serge Ibaka in free agency, and Kyle Lowry is another year older. At the very least, VanVleet should meet his production from last season, making him a strong second-to-third round option in most fantasy leagues.
The hero of Game 6 of the NBA Finals, VanVleet comes into the new season with the chance to get more playing time and take on an expanded role with Toronto. He had a career year with the Raptors and averaged double-digit points for the first time, scoring 11.0 per game to go along with 4.8 assists, 2.6 rebounds and 1.8 threes. His production across almost every category has increased in each of his three seasons in the NBA, and that coincides with growth from back-of-the-bench rookie to invaluable reserve. After a strong showing in the postseason -- 14.0 points and 2.7 threes on 40.0% shooting from deep in the Finals -- it's possible VanVleet's role with Toronto progresses to starter in his fourth year. The Wichita State product will fight for a starting job at shooting guard with Norman Powell, but it was VanVleet -- not Powell -- who played heavy minutes in the Finals and has clearly earned the trust of the coaching staff. The absence of Kawhi Leonard will free up additional opportunities for VanVleet as well. Whether starting or coming off the bench, VanVleet can be reasonably projected to be a key part of the Raptors' rotation in 2019-20.
After barely playing as an undrafted rookie out of Wichita State in 2016-17, VanVleet became a significant contributor for the Raptors in his second year, helping lead one of the better benches in the entire NBA. Operating as Kyle Lowry's backup at point guard, VanVleet posted averages of 8.6 points, 3.2 assists and 2.4 rebounds across 20.0 minutes. He also upped his efficiency as a shooter and finished 42.6 percent from the field, 41.4 percent from the three-point line and 83.2 percent from the charity stripe. Whenever Lowry or DeMar DeRozan were off the floor, VanVleet provided a reliable option as both a facilitator and a scorer, which landed him in the discussion for the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year award. VanVleet wound up placing third behind Lou Williams and Eric Gordon, but it was a still a testament to how valuable he was to a team that finished with the best record in the Eastern Conference. After earning a two-year, $18.1 million extension this offseason, VanVleet returns in what should be a similar role in the backcourt. The Raptors traded away DeRozan and brought in the likes of Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green, but it shouldn't impact VanVleet's role much. Look for him to operate as the No. 2 option at point guard behind Lowry, as well as the first guy off the bench most nights. That should limit his utility to a late-round option in deeper leagues.

VanVleet is shooting 31.5 percent on layups this season, missing 37 of 55 attempts through his first 20 games.
ANALYSIS
VanVleet's overall rim efficiency of 32.7 percent ranks dead last among all players with at least 50 shots at the basket. Getting to the rim isn't an overly relevant part of VanVleet's offensive portfolio, as he's graded in the bottom-20 percent of all players for rim frequency in each of the last three seasons. Nonetheless, he was passable in the prior two campaigns, combining to average 47.4 percent shooting at the rim.
