Reid is one of the most intriguing big men in the NBA, but it's frustrating to see him stuck in a bench role with Minnesota. Karl-Anthony Towns and Rudy Gobert were ahead of Reid, and after a blockbuster trade, Julius Randle will replace Towns in 2024-25. In a reduced role, Reid averaged 12.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.7 steals, 0.8 blocks and 1.8 threes in his 83 games coming off the bench last season, including the postseason. That's a glimpse of what makes him so special despite playing just 23 minutes a night. We also saw Reid average 17.6 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.2 steals, 1.4 blocks and 2.9 threes across 29.2 minutes in his 14 regular-season games as a starter. There aren't many players with that sort of diverse stat line, and everyone could see it at times during the postseason. The fact is, Reid will likely never play more than 25 minutes as long as Gobert and Randle are healthy. However, Reid still has value because of how dominant he can be in that limited role, taking down Sixth Man of the Year last year. He's also just one injury away from being a top-40 player, so he's one of the toughest players to value heading into drafts. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Reid was born Aug. 26, 1999 in Asbury Park, New Jersey. He didn't start playing organized basketball until eighth grade, but caught on quickly. He attended Roselle Catholic High School and led his team to win the New Jersey Tournament of Champions his senior year, where Reid scored 22 points in the finals. He was later invited to the McDonalds All-Star game, where he recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Reid was a consensus five-star recruit coming out of high school and elected to play at LSU, where he majored in interdisciplinary studies. As a collegiate athlete, Reid's favorite NBA player was Kevin Durant. His favorite athlete outside of basketball at the time was fellow LSU alumni Odell Beckham Jr. You can follow Reid on Instagram @hollywood.naz. Reid spent one season at LSU. He appeared in 34 games (32 starts), averaging 13.6 points on 46.8 percent shooting from the field, 33.3 percent from three and 72.7 percent from the charity stripe. He also averaged 7.2 rebounds. Those numbers fueled an SEC All-Freshman Team selection. Reid set single-game season highs of 29 points (twice), 15 rebounds, four blocks, three steals and three assists. His best performance of the season occurred Mar. 15 during a loss to Florida. He posted 26 points (11-20 FG, 3-4 3Pt, 1-2 FT), 14 rebounds, one assist and one steal across 36 minutes. He went undrafted in the 2019 NBA Draft, but signed a two-way contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves shortly after.

Reid chipped in three points (1-10 FG, 0-4 3Pt, 1-1 FT), eight rebounds, three assists and one block over 27 minutes during Sunday's 106-92 win over the Spurs.
ANALYSIS Reid has now been held to single-digit points in seven of his last 11 games. During that stretch, he's been outside the top 150 in nine-category formats, posting averages of 8.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists, 1.1 steals, 1.4 blocks and 1.0 three-pointers on 34.0 percent shooting from the field. With solid peripheral stats keeping him afloat, his fantasy managers will need to patiently wait for him to break out of his slump.

After seeing a slight drop in production from Year 2 to 3, Reid surprisingly posted career highs in points (11.5) and rebounds (4.9) per game in Year 4 despite the Timberwolves adding Rudy Gobert to their frontcourt ahead of the 2022-23 campaign. Reid's increased numbers were due to Karl-Anthony Towns missing more than half of the campaign due to injuries. But Minnesota still views the LSU product as a core piece and signed Reid to a three-year, $42 million deal this offseason as proof. The 6-foot-9 big man was excellent as a starter last year, posting 16.5 points, 7.0 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.0 blocks in 26.1 minutes per game. He was on a hot streak before breaking his wrist a few weeks before the regular season ended, averaging 18.1 points, 4.9 rebounds and 1.0 steals-plus-blocks with 57/37/76 shooting splits over his last eight appearances. He underwent surgery in early April and was expected to miss six weeks, so Reid should be back to full strength by training camp. Despite signing an extension, the 6-foot-9 big man is still slated for a backup role, limiting his overall fantasy value, but if Towns or Gobert misses time, Reid would quickly become a must-start player due to his multi-faceted skill set.
Despite putting together a moderately successful season during 2021-22, Reid could find himself on the outside looking in when it comes to center minutes. The addition of Rudy Gobert will see Karl-Anthony Towns shift to the power forward position. However, Towns is still likely to spend some time at center, meaning Reid could be squeezed out of the rotation, or at least minimized in terms of playing time. He saw 16 minutes per night last season, ending with season averages of 8.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 0.9 blocks. While he does provide nice energy off the bench, he will need an injury to either Gobert or Towns to force himself into the standard league conversation.
Reid once again primarily played a backup role to Karl-Anthony Towns. The former saw 19.2 minutes per game and averaged 11.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, 1.6 combined blocks-plus-steals and 1.0 assists. His 4.9 percent block rate ranked ninth-highest in the NBA, and he was 15th in total blocks (76) despite playing just 1,347 minutes. He upgraded his efficiency significantly compared to his rookie year, shooting 52/35/69 for a true-shooting percentage of 59.9. Heading into 2021-22, his role shouldn't change unless the Timberwolves surprisingly start to play Towns and Reid together for significant minutes. They only spent 97 total minutes on the court together last season, and those lineups weren't effective. Fantasy managers in deep leagues have reason to consider Reid with a final pick given his quality per-minute production, but it would probably take an injury to Towns for the selection to pay off. Ultimately, Reid may be most valuable in keeper/dynasty leagues where managers can bank on the 22-year-old eventually finding himself in a better role on a different team.
The big man out of LSU enjoyed a surprising level of success in his first season with Minnesota. He logged 16.5 minutes and averaged 9.0 points, 4.1 boards, 1.3 combined blocks/steals, 1.2 assists and 1.1 threes. He appeared in just 30 NBA contests while spending the rest of the season with the G-League affiliate, though he got the chance to shine at the end of the season. With Karl-Anthony Towns out due to a wrist injury, Reid started the final 11 games of the season and averaged 11.7 points, 6.5 boards, 2.3 combined blocks/steals, and 1.9 assists, proving to be a viable fantasy option while in the starting lineup. His performance has likely earned him a spot on the Timberwolves' permanent roster, and he'll have a great chance to log regular minutes as the first center off the bench. He's worth a late-round flyer in deeper leagues.

Set for bigger role in 2024-25?
CMinnesota Timberwolves
October 2, 2024
The Timberwolves are betting Reid will continue to evolve after winning Sixth Man of the Year in 2023-24, according to Chris Hine of The Star Tribune.
ANALYSIS The Timberwolves traded Karl-Anthony Towns to the Knicks in the offseason, and while Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert will be the starters in the frontcourt, Reid should handle several minutes off the bench. He's coming off a career-best year after averaging 13.5 points, 5.2 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 0.9 blocks and 0.8 steals across 24.2 minutes while appearing in 81 regular-season games in 2023-24.
