2024 Fantasy Outlook
Claxton's rebounding and shot-blocking abilities make him a draftable player, but his poor free-throw shooting and complete lack of a three-pointer limit his upside. Over the last two seasons, he's averaged 12.3 points, 9.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 2.3 blocks while missing only 17 games. However, his field-goal percentage dipped from a career-high 70.5 percent in 2022-23 to 62.9 percent last season. While that's still an elite number, the drop significantly impacted his value in category leagues. He finished 83rd in eight-category leagues last year compared to 29th in 2022-23. The Nets are in the midst of a rebuild following the trade of Mikal Bridges to the Knicks, but Claxton appears to be Brooklyn's cornerstone player after signing a four-year, $100 extension this offseason. That doesn't mean increased production and could even be a negative if the Nets, who are expected to be one of the worst teams in the NBA, rest Claxton late in the campaign to improve their draft position. Claxton has more value in points leagues, but barring a major step forward, it's difficult to use a top-50 pick on a player with such limited fantasy upside. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Nicolas Devir Claxton was born in 1999 in Greenville, South Carolina. He is the son of University of Georgia alums Charles and Nicole Claxton. Nicolas also attended Georgia for two years. Like his son, Charles played collegiate ball for the Bulldogs, earning both freshman All-SEC honors. He also briefly played for the Boston Celtics during the 1995-96 season. Before attending Georgia, Nicolas Claxton was a high school student at the Legacy Charter School in Greenville. Claxton was the fourth player in Legacy history to score more than 1,000 career points (1,163). He has also represented the U.S. Virgin Islands in various international competitions and was eligible to do so because his father was born in St. Thomas. Claxton's nickname is "Clax". Fans can follow the 6-foot-11 Bulldog product on Twitter at @_claxton33 and on Instagram @nicolasclaxton. Claxton got his feet wet in international basketball competition as a teenager when he played for the United Stated Virgin Islands team. He averaged 10.6 points and 11.8 rebounds in the Centrobasket Under-15 Championship in 2014. Two years later, he helped the Virgin Islands place seventh in the FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship by averaged 12.0 points and 7.2 rebounds. The 6-8 forward chose Georgia over Baylor and South Carolina (where he played high school basketball). He started just five games a freshman, but developed into a star as a sophomore. During the 2018-19 season, he led the Bulldogs with 13.0 points, 8.6 rebounds and 2.5 blocks and started in all of Georgia's 32 games. The lanky forward collected eight double-doubles and led Georgia in scoring, rebounding, blocks and steals. He helped Georgia knock off rival Georgia Tech in December with 13 points, 13 rebounds, six assists and six blocks. Claxton was named to the 2019 All-SEC Second Team and became the 36th Georgia player to become an NBA Draft pick.

Strains back, out at least one week

Claxton will miss at least one week with a lower back strain and will receive an epidural injection Friday, Erik Slater of ClutchPoints.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The Nets slowly worked Claxton back from hamstring soreness earlier in the season, and he will now miss time with a new injury. The big man has appeared in seven straight contests (five starts) in November, during which he has averaged 8.3 points, 7.4 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 0.9 blocks across 27.0 minutes per game. While Claxton is sidelined, Ben Simmons and Noah Clowney could be in store for more run at center.

2019
Fantasy managers know what they're getting with Claxton, but he's one of the best at what he does. This is strictly a big man who finishes at the rim, grabs every board and plays some of the best defense in the NBA. That's evident in his averages, finishing last season with 12.6 points, 9.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 0.9 steals and 2.5 blocks on 70.5 percent shooting. That shooting percentage was the highest total in the NBA, while the blocks were third. That's impressive since he never played more than 20 minutes a game in the three years prior, posting a 30-minute average last season. It's clear that the ticker is pointing up for this youngster, but one has to wonder if this is Claxton's ceiling with the lack of offensive game. He attempted just 7.7 shots per game last year, and almost all of them were at the rim. That's a low-impact total, which means the shooting percentage isn't as valuable as it looks. His free-throw shooting can also be a disaster, with Claxton converting just 54.1 percent last year. That's one of the worst marks in the NBA. What's nice is that there are no other proven centers in Brooklyn, so his 30 minutes from last season should be sustainable. He ranked 40th in per-game, eight-category production last season.
Claxton has been a name to watch for the past two seasons. Claxton flashed his upside on both ends of the floor again last year. He ended with averages of 8.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 1.1 blocks and 0.5 steals in just under 21 minutes per game. Projecting forward, it would appear as though the time is now for Claxton, especially given that he has little competition for minutes. The only other center on the roster is Day'Ron Sharpe, but he's undersized and spent significant time in the G League last year as a rookie. It's also possible Ben Simmons spends some time at center. In general, things look good for Claxton to have a career-best season, and for anyone drafting early, he is a viable top-100 target.
Claxton was selected by the Nets with the first pick in the second round of the 2019 Draft. The 6-foot-11, 215-pound center spent two seasons at Georgia. Last year, he earned Second Team All-SEC (Coaches) honors, averaging 13.0 points (46.0 FG%, 28.1 3P%, 64.1 FT%), 8.6 rebounds, 2.5 blocks, 1.8 assists and 1.1 steals across 31.6 minutes. Appearing in four summer league contests, Claxton posted 5.5 points and 4.8 rebounds in 15.8 minutes per game. Claxton has clear upside as a defender, and it's possible he develops an outside shot. However, he was just 26-for-86 (30.2 percent) from deep in his 65 college appearances and hit only 61.1 percent of his 257 free-throws. With Brooklyn, Claxton is firmly behind the likes of DeAndre Jordan and Jarrett Allen in the center rotation, and the rookie will probably only see real action if there is an injury.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Likely available for season opener
CBrooklyn Nets
October 20, 2024
Claxton is dealing with a hamstring injury but is expected to be available for the start of the 2024-25 regular season, head coach Jordi Fernandez told Brian Lewis of The New York Post. "Nic is close. We're still aiming for the first game of the season," Fernandez said. "He's done a good job. He's working hard. So we expect him to play the season opener."
ANALYSIS
Claxton has been dealing with hamstring soreness, and Fernandez has been careful not to overextend him throughout the preseason. That's understandable considering Claxton figures to be one of the top players on the team and is a core piece of the franchise's long-term plans. The Nets open their 2024-25 campaign against the Hawks on Wednesday, and Claxton is expected to be the starter at center in that matchup.
