An overmatched UT-Rio Grande Valley squad had no answers for Kalkbrenner, whose 49 points were not only a career-high total but also the second-most in Creighton history and the fifth-most by a Big East player. After forgoing a move to the NBA to return to Creighton for a fifth season, the 7-foot-1 center looks like he'll move into a more focal role on offense in 2024-25 for the Bluejays, who lost their top two scorers from last season (Baylor Scheierman and Trey Alexander) to the professional ranks. Kalkbrenner is already perhaps the most accomplished rim protector in the nation, having averaged at least 2.0 blocks per game in each of the last three seasons while taking home Big East Defensive Player of the Year honors in each of those seasons.
