Fully cleared from knee injury
July 16, 2024
Thompson (knee) is fully cleared from his previous injury, George Stoia of On3 reports.
ANALYSIS
Thompson gives Oklahoma's football program an experienced quarterback should the Sooners not be content rolling with Jackson Arnold, who started their 2023 bowl game, as their primary option. Oklahoma is Thompson's fourth college. During 2023, he was limited to 509 passing yards and five touchdowns with Florida Atlantic. But while enrolled at Texas and Nebraska, Thompson threw over 2,000 passing yards and logged more than 20 touchdowns overall, accomplishments Arnold has not achieved.

2022
Thompson is one of those quarterbacks who has hopped around in hopes of finding a spot where he can excel. Granted, he did have a solid season in 2021 with Texas, but seeing the writing on the wall he moved to Nebraska, where once again he saw his head coach come and go. Now, Thompson is in Florida Atlantic, where he is seeing a familiar face. Former Longhorns head coach Tom Herman is now leading the Owls as they move from Conference USA to the AAC. That’s a step up in competition, even if the AAC is in turn losing teams to the Big 12. Clearly, there is a lot of uncertainty to be found here. Ultimately, though, Thompson is a former Texas Longhorns starting quarterback, and that carries cache. You don’t get there without skill, and the starting gig for Florida Atlantic is all but Thompson’s, as the competition is meager. This has the potential to be a big season for Thompson, though obviously that is highly speculative, more than with many other quarterbacks.
Thompson is the clear front-runner for Nebraska’s starting quarterback job heading into the 2022 campaign. The Texas transfer boasts the highest upside of any signal-caller on the Huskers’ roster, but he is by no means perfect. Though he struggled down the stretch of the 2021 season, Thompson started 10 games with Texas last season and threw for 2,113 yards and 24 touchdowns while completing 63.2 percent of his passes. New offensive coordinator and unofficial passing game coordinator Mark Whipple should help optimize Thompson's potential. Whipple has orchestrated a long line of prolific passing offenses throughout his career, including a Pittsburgh offense led by Heisman trophy finalist Kenny Pickett in 2021. Thompson will have a chance to star at the center of Nebraska’s refurbished offense in 2022, so long as his new team helps put him in the best positions to succeed.
