Done for season
Knee
November 20, 2022
Hooker suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during Saturday's 63-38 loss to South Carolina, Patrick Brown of 247Sports.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Hooker exited after going down with a non-contact left knee injury in the fourth quarter. After undergoing further evaluation Sunday, Hooker was diagnosed with the season-ending injury, which effectively ends his his collegiate career. Hooker finishes his second season as the Volunteers' starting quarterback with 3,135 passing yards and a 27:2 TD:INT to go with 430 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Before sustaining the injury, Hooker looked to be a strong contender to be a Heisman Trophy finalist, but the fact that he'll miss the Nov. 26 regular-season finale against Vanderbilt may be enough to remove him from consideration. In his stead, Joe Milton will presumably take over as the starting quarterback for the Week 13 game as well as an eventual bowl game.

2020
There were two quarterbacks in college football who threw for at least 30 touchdowns and fewer than five interceptions: Hooker and NC State’s Devin Leary. And unlike Leary, Hooker also produced on the ground with 612 rush yards and five touchdowns while maintaining a strong 9.72 YPA as a passer. Tennessee’s offense lays the foundation for Hooker to succeed; it’s up-tempo (20th in plays per game) and explosive (18th in yards per play). With Hooker as the trigger man, it’s not unrealistic to expect another step forward from him in Year 2 in this explosive offense.
Hooker transferred to Tennessee from Virginia Tech and has a great chance to be the starting quarterback when the Vols open their 2021 campaign. Jarrett Guarantano and JT Shrout both transferred out following last season, leaving only Harrison Bailey and Brian Maurer as competition. Hooker is a dual-threat option who rushed for 620 yards and nine touchdowns in 2020, but struggled passing the ball downfield. He averaged just 8.9 yards per attempt, tossed nine touchdowns as compared to five picks and went from the bench to starter and back to the bench for the season finale against Virginia. Hooker gets a fresh start at Tennessee, through the Vols continue to lag behind most of their SEC counterparts, which could make Hooker’s job difficult.
Hooker enters 2020 as a feast or famine option, seemingly stuck between taking a giant step forward or possibly losing his starting job. At his best, he's arguably the best dual threat quarterback in the ACC, running at least 10 times in all but one start last year while accumulating 18 total touchdowns in eight games. But whether it's a lack of confidence from his coaching staff or poor decision making, Hooker was often left to dink and dunk, forcing the ball downfield only when the scoreboard necessitated. He completed a mere 98 passes once assuming his starting role, and any early season struggles will likely lead to extended chances for Oregon transfer Braxton Burmeister or Quincy Patterson. The ceiling for Hooker could be 3,000+ total yards and 20+ touchdowns, but the floor could be he's replaced before October, which makes him a lottery ticket QB3 in larger formats on draft day.
