Martavis Bryant

Bryant is the ultimate wild card this year -- at least while Josh Gordon is still banned from the league. Bryant had already missed 11 games in his first two seasons before sitting out all 2016 for substance abuse violations. Assuming he complies with reinstatement terms, Bryant should be cleared to play at some point during the preseason. Bryant has as much per-play upside as any WR. At 6-4, 211, with 4.42 speed, a huge catch radius and excellent ball skills, Bryant is physically similar to peak Randy Moss. And the results back that up -- 10 catches of 40-plus yards and 14 TDs on 141 career targets. Of course, Bryant is second fiddle with superstar Antonio Brown opposite him, and QB Ben Roethlisberger is not the same player he was when Bryant took the league by storm in 2014. But there's no serious threat to Bryant's role should he show up with his head on straight.

With so much talent, fantasy owners can only scratch their head and wonder “what if”. Bryant has already missed 11 games in his first two seasons and, after multiple violations of the league's substance abuse policy, will serve a minimum one-year suspension in 2016. He still has two years remaining on his contract with Pittsburgh, so he might be worth a late-round gamble in dynasty leagues with the hope that he is reinstated next season.

Yet another member of last year's historic rookie receiver class, Bryant didn't suit up until Week 7, due to a shoulder injury. Then despite seeing limited snaps, he racked up six touchdowns in his first four contests and eight over his first 10 games. Bryant's per-play numbers were off the charts — 21.1 YPC and 11.2 YPT on 49 targets — thanks to his ability to beat defenses deep (five of his 26 receptions were for 40 or more yards). At 6-4, 211, with 4.4 speed, Bryant has the specs of a star wideout and is the team's one target — besides tight end Heath Miller — ideally suited to red-zone work. But all-world wideout Antonio Brown and star tailback Le'Veon Bell (once he serves his two-game suspension) will occupy a large percentage of the team's play calls, and Markus Wheaton, rookie Sammie Coates and Miller give the Steelers more pass-catching depth than most teams. Alas, news broke in late August that Bryant is facing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's Substance Abuse Policy, which obviously curtails his early-season fantasy utility.

Bryant may have been very inconsistent in college, but at 6-4 and with 4.4 speed he brings size and speed elements to the Steelers that no other receiver on their roster possesses. In theory he'll be splitting playing time with second-year pro Markus Wheaton behind Antonio Brown and free agent Lance Moore, but it wouldn't be surprising if both youngsters got snaps at Moore's expense later in the season should Bryant show more polish than expected.
