PJ Walker

Mostly serving as the Panthers' backup quarterback last season, Walker completed 36 of 66 passes (54.5 percent) for 362 yards and one touchdown versus three interceptions in five appearances. That limited output came despite Sam Darnold and subsequently Cam Newton struggling in the starter's role. With Darnold back this season and Carolina adding both Baker Mayfield and third-round pick Matt Corral, it's hard to see where Walker fits on the roster.

In his first NFL season, Walker beat out 2019 third-rounder Will Grier to become Teddy Bridgewater's understudy. With Bridgewater injured Week 11, Walker led the Panthers to victory. However, Walker wasn't very impressive overall, completing 57 percent of his passes for 368 yards, one touchdown and five interceptions in four appearances. Heading into 2021, Walker again is the favorite to serve as Carolina's backup quarterback, but he'll be behind Sam Darnold this time around.

Signed by the Panthers this offseason, Walker figures to compete for the backup job behind quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. After going undrafted in 2017, Walker spent time on the Colts' practice squad but has yet to make an NFL appearance. In Carolina, he'll be reunited with his college coach Matt Rhule, whose four years at Temple overlapped Walker's time at the school. Along with setting records there, Walker's most recent playing experience saw him lead the XFL in passing yards and passing touchdowns while posting a 5-0 record for the Houston Roughnecks. Those factors figure to give Walker a decent shot against 2019 third-rounder Will Grier to become Rhule's second-string option this season.
