2024 Fantasy Outlook
Thompson's rookie season with the Dolphins was his most eventful, as he piloted one regular-season win and showed flashes in a 34-31 wild-card loss to Buffalo. He didn't get any playing time in 2023 after the addition of Mike White to serve as Tua Tagovailoa's top backup, but salary cap situations could mean that won't be a long-term bandaid. Thompson boasts dual-threat athletic traits and will be going into his third year of development in coach Mike McDaniel's system, so he could surprise if he gets an opportunity. Read Past Outlooks

Has McDaniel's confidence
Coach Mike McDaniel said Friday that Thompson is the "next man up" at quarterback with Tua Tagovailoa in the concussion protocol, but that Miami will likely bring in a third-stringer from outside the organization, Alain Poupart of SI.com reports.
ANALYSIS
McDaniel said Miami is "very confident" in Thompson, who appears slated to start Week 3 against the Seahawks on Sunday, Sept. 22 if Tagovailoa is unable to clear concussion protocol, per Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. Thompson entered Thursday night's 31-10 divisional loss to the Buffalo with just over four minutes remaining in the third quarter, completing eight of 14 passes for 80 yards without a touchdowns or interception. He also rushed once for four yards, operating an offense without top wideouts Tyreek Hill or Jaylen Waddle, who were both pulled from the matchup early. During the preseason, Thompson beat out Mike White for the Dolphins' backup gig by virtue of completing 35 of 61 passes for 379 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions across three exhibition contests.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
Thompson showed some flashes as a rookie after joining Miami as a seventh-rounder last season. In two starts, he managed a regular-season finale win over the Jets and put up a fight against the Bills in a 34-31 wild-card loss. Though Thompson carries over a unique amount of experience into Year 2 for a player in his draft slot, the Dolphins did see fit to pursue a more experienced backup in the form of Mike White to support Tua Tagovailoa. Still, Thompson's athletic traits and rookie flashes make his development is worth monitoring.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Emerging as QB2
Omar Kelly of the Miami Herald relays that Thompson handled the bulk of the second-team snaps this past week in practice and is on the cusp of supplanting Mike White as the Dolphins' backup quarterback behind Tua Tagovailoa.
ANALYSIS
Thompson started in Miami's preseason opener against Atlanta, finishing the contest completing eight of 19 passes for 95 yards, one touchdown and one interception. It wasn't an efficient outing for Thompson, but it was a better performance than White, who completed just four of 14 passes for 26 yards and no scores. Saturday's preseason bout against the Commanders should give head coach Mike McDaniel a better sense of who the better backup to Tagovailoa will be as the regular season inches closer.
