Westwood currently is not qualified for any of the majors.
Westwood rolled the clock back in a big way in 2020-21, nearly winning on two occasions and earning just less than $3.5 million, that's the good news. The bad news is, he ran out of gas quickly after those runner-ups and didn't resemble that player the rest of the season. That's what happens when you turn 48. It's not just his age, however. The four previous seasons were dreadful and there's no reason to think last season was anything but one last run from a one great golfer.
Westwood still has game, but played a very limited schedule last year. He made a lot of cash by finishing T2 in the Masters, so he'll be back at Augusta this season. If you're a gambling man, he's worth a shot in deeper formats.
Westwood had a great 2013 season, but much like his entire career in the US, he came up just a bit short. 2014 was a different story as Westwood didn't show the punch that he had in 2013. Does this mean he's on the down-side of his career? Probably not quite yet, but his upside seems to be limited now, so even at this price he's not a "must-have" in salary cap leagues. In draft leagues he's probably a 7th-round pick because of his value during the majors.
Just as the major questions continue to dog Sergio Garcia, they'll continue to haunt Lee Westwood as unlike Garcia, Westwood actually had a major in his grasp last year only to falter in the final round. It's hard to say if he'll ever get that elusive major, but his production is fairly easy to predict. He'll contend during one or two majors, maybe pick up a win elsewhere and collect a bunch of top-10s -- just like last year. As such, he's a good pick in the 25-30 range, but probably not a good salary cap option.
Last season was another good year for Lee Westwood, emphasis on the word good. It seems as though a great year is always just around the corner, but Westwood can never quite get there, at least on the PGA TOUR anyway. Although that great season may never come, Westwood is still one of the most consistent golfers on tour. The problem with Westwood is the number of PGA TOUR events he plays each year. Westwood will always be committed overseas, and even though he'll reportedly play more in the U.S. this year, it's not like he'll play 20-plus events this season. While you can expect a bunch of high finishes from Westwood this season, it won't be enough to justify his selection in a salary cap format. In draft leagues he should go in the third round.
Lee Westwood was briefly the No. 1-ranked player in the world last year, but for some reason, he just can't put it all together at the right time. He's come very close but lacks the closing prowess of the better players on the PGA Tour, at least on this side of the pond, which just happens to play host to three of the four majors. Maybe he'll pick up that first major and everything will become easier, just like it was for Phil Mickelson, but until he gets there, the pressure will continue to mount.
Westwood had a great 2010 season, but non-PGA Tour members rarely earn more than $2 million, let alone $3 million. While he's got the potential to match that number this season, odds are, he falls short. Even if he happens to win his first major this season, he's still got his work cut out to crack $3 million again in the U.S.
Westwood earned third-place finishes at the PGA Championship and the British Open last season, a feat which he's not likely to out do this season. Westwood has become a solid player over the years, but he's never matched his European Tour success on the PGA TOUR. Westwood, who was 10th at the end of 2008, moved up to fourth in the final 2009 Official World Golf Rankings.
Westwood plays about 10 events each year on the PGA Tour. Last season he happened to play well during those 10 events, but with a schedule like that, it leaves little room for error.
Westwood carefully picks his spots both in the USA and on foreign soil. He hasn't won very often even though he usually plays well. He's the type who might just "show-up" at one of the big tournaments.
