2025 Fantasy Outlook
While it was the worst putting season of Finau's career since he's been on the PGA Tour, it was hard to not be impressed with the rest of his game. Finau ranked second in SG: Approach and 12th in SG: Around-the-Green. That resulted in a lot of consistent results, finishing inside the top-25 15 times, including nine of his final ten starts. Much of that terrible putting came earlier in the season. Around the time he clicked off three straight top-10s at the Memorial, the U.S. Open and the Travelers, Finau was in the mix of a strong stretch on the greens in which he gained in six in a row. The 35-year-old is never going to have the greatest putting numbers, but as long as it's just decent he's going to be in a lot of tournaments given how good his approach play has been over the last few years. Out of Hero World Challenge
Undisclosed
December 2, 2024
Finau (undisclosed) has withdraw from the Hero World Challenge, Brentley Romine of Golf Channel reports.
ANALYSIS
There was no reason given for Finau's withdrawal from the 20-man field in the Bahamas, but there have been rumors swirling about Finau potentially making a move to LIV Golf in 2025. This was about the time LIV made a splash last year by signing Jon Rahm. We'll have to wait and see if there's any truth to those rumors, but for now Finau will be replaced at the Hero World Challenge by Sepp Straka.

Finau began the 2022-23 season great with 13 finishes of T31-or-better in his first 14 starts. That stretch included a pair of wins at the Houston Open and the Mexico Open. Finau's lone top-15 over the last 10 events was a T7 at the 3M Open. His poor play down the stretch likely had a lot to do with him being left off the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Finau has never been a great putter, but last season was one of his worst in that regard. The good news is that his iron play was strong at fifth in SG: Approach. Still just 34 years old, Finau is simply too talented to play like he did last summer in 2024.
Finau really struggled for the first several months of the season, but an incredible summer made 2021-22 his best season to date. He finished runner-up at both the Mexico Open and Canadian Open and then won back-to-back weeks at the 3M Open and Rocket Mortgage Classic. The now four-time PGA Tour winner ranked top-15 in SG: Off-the-Tee, SG: Approach, SG: Tee-to-Green, GIR percentage, and scoring average. Finau has all the talent in the world and now that he has the confidence that he can win out here consistently, he's a dark horse Player of the Year canidate in 2022-23.
After what seemed like a decade without winning, Finau finally captured his second win on the PGA Tour at the Northern Trust. He came painfully close at the Genesis Invitational in February, which only increased the pressure, but Finau was able to endure and get back to the winner's circle. What this means for his future is unclear, but it's not crazy to think that FInau's game will take off from here. No longer will he have to answer questions about his failure to win, now he can focus on using his immense talent to win more often on the PGA Tour. With that in mind, Finau makes for a decent salary cap option this season as his ceiling is seemingly as high as some elite players on the PGA Tour.
In his six years on the PGA Tour, Finau has earned roughly $20 million, and yet, he still has just one win to his name. It's quite baffling that a guy with so much talent and is so often in the mix, only has one win on his resume, but that's the situation entering year number seven. Finau had yet another productive season this past year and there's no reason to think his production will fall off this year either. As such, his number is in range to be considered as a salary cap option this season.
Finau has earned over $16 million since first joining the PGA Tour five seasons ago and yet he's won just one event. It's amazing that a golfer as highly thought of as Finau has just one win on his resume. That will change sometime soon and when it does, it could open the flood gates. His number from this past season is considerable, but Finau appears to have the upside to reach $6 million if all goes well. It's certainly a risky play, but Finau is worth some consideration in salary cap leagues this season.
Finau has been a solid player since joining the PGA Tour in 2015, but last season he took his game to another level. Finau averaged over $2 million in earnings over his first three seasons on the PGA Tour, but last season he blew that number out of the water with over $5.6 million in earnings. The strange thing is, he managed to put up his career-best numbers without a victory. He does have a win on his resume, but that came two seasons back. Last season he merely picked-up three runner-up finishes. Those runner-ups add up however and when you make nearly every cut, those checks add up as well. Finau's best golf is likely still ahead of him, but he doesn't have much upside left in salary cap leagues this season. In draft leagues he's a solid second-rounder.
Finau entered the 2015 season with a lot of hype and he didn't disappoint as he topped the $2 million mark in his rookie season. He backed that up with another solid season the year following and he did the same last season, with yet another solid showing. Last year was actually Finau's best and there's a chance that it's part of a progression that will continue this season. That's a big leap of faith however as he posted a high number last season, but he's got the game to get, so he deserves some consideration in salary cap leagues this season.
Finau has made quite an impression in his first two seasons on the PGA Tour. Though he regressed a little last season, he still played a very-high level. Finau was more consistent during his rookie season, but he never found a win. That changed in his 2nd-season as he lost a bit of consistency, but picked up his first win. He's probably OK with that trade. With a proven record of consistency in year-one and a win under his belt in year-two, Finau seems ready to take the next step. As such, he's definitely worth a look in salary cap formats this year. In drafts, he's a fifth- or sixth-round pick.
Finau is a former Big Break contestant – he finished second, losing in the championship match on season 12, Big Break: Disney Golf in 2009 – and will try to join Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey as the only Big Break alumni to win on the PGA Tour. He got to the PGA Tour by virtue of his victory at the Stonebrae Classic, which included middle rounds of 62-63, and four other top-10s. Averaging 310.3 yards off the tee and ranking ninth in the Web.com Tour All-Around Ranking, Finau is someone to watch in the fall because he ended the year on an up note: finishing T19-T46-T6-T14 over the course of the Web.com Tour Finals. If he can acclimate himself quickly to life on the PGA Tour, look for him to contend early.
