The NFL concluded its season Sunday after the Big Game, which means it is now time to turn our full attention to hockey. Here are some picks for the daily game to help you through your Monday:
Goalie
Ben Bishop, DAL vs. ARI ($33)
The Stars have won all three of their games since the All-Star break and its been in part due to the solid play of their starting keeper -- Bishop has allowed one goal per game over his last three wins, one of which was a 30-save shutout. This Arizona offense isn't very high powered, averaging just 2.48 away goals per game, so Bishop should provide nice value in this spot.
Goalie to Avoid
Jonathan Quick, LA @ NYR ($35)
Quick is undoubtedly having one of the worst seasons of his impressive career, so though his name still carries some clout, he isn't worth the second-highest billing for goalies in this slate. The American has allowed three goals or more in four of his last six starts, facing almost 33 shots per game. He also just lost one of his most reliable defensemen in Jake Muzzin to a trade, so he's not a good play right now.
Center
Ryan Getzlaf, ANH @ TOR ($13)
This pricing feels like a glitch, but you should absolutely take advantage anyway. Sure, Getzlaf's numbers this season aren't as prolific as we've come to expect over his career, but he's still the Ducks' points leader and he still dominates ice time for the team at even strength and on the power play. In fact, he was priced at $19 in the last slate, so definitely grab this while you can.
Center to Avoid
Nazem Kadri, TOR vs. ANH ($19)
Kadri may be playing for one of the most explosive offenses in the league, but his inconsistency on the statsheet is what prevents him from being an effective daily fantasy option. He's put up seven points in the last eight games, but five of those efforts resulted in scoring goose eggs. John Gibson can be tough to crack, so you won't want to rely on Kadri on Monday.
Wings
Brock Boeser, VAN @ PHI ($23)
Boeser has missed significant time to injuries this season but he finally seems to be putting the pieces together -- he's managed seven points in his last six contests with a plus-3 rating over that span. The Minnesota native is benefiting mightily from running with rookie phenom Elias Pettersson, so be sure to deploy one or both of them in a potentially high-scoring clash with the Flyers.
Jakub Voracek, PHI vs. VAN ($18)
Speaking of Monday's matchup in Philadelphia, one option across the ice from the Canucks would be the excellent value Voracek. The Czech national shows 10 points over his last eight contests and while all those scores were assists, it's encouraging that he's averaging three shots on goal per game over the last five. Fire him up against a Canucks team that allows 3.19 road goals per game.
Wings to Avoid
Alexander Radulov, DAL vs. ARI ($24)
Radulov proved his fantasy worth at points earlier this season, but lately he hasn't been justifying the 24 dollar price tag he's sporting Monday. The 32-year-old has not found the back of the net since Jan. 6 and in the nine games since then, he shows just five assists. He may struggle to put up top-tier numbers against a Coyotes defense that is stouter than it first appears.
Dustin Brown, LA @ NYR ($18)
After producing a career season in 2017-18, Brown has mostly fallen to the wayside in the current campaign, showing 31 points and a plus-1 rating in 41 contests. The New York native's play has been particularly uninspired lately, as he has just one goal in the 11 games since the beginning of 2019. You shouldn't trust him in this cross-country road matchup against the Rangers.
Defensemen
Jake Muzzin, TOR vs. ANH ($18)
Muzzin has not done anything particularly notable in his first two games as a Maple Leaf following last week's blockbuster trade. That said, there's reason for optimism going forward -- the Canadian d-man's ice time, both at even strength and on the power play, increased significantly between his first and second game suggesting that, with an additional day's rest and preparation, the solid two-way defenseman could be heavily involved Monday.
Esa Lindell, DAL vs. ARI ($17)
Lindell provides nice value in this spot because he maintains a nice fantasy floor while still having a decently high ceiling with this effective Dallas offense. The Finnish blueliner has six points and a plus-6 rating over his last five contests, but what provides the real sense of security is that he's blocked at least one shot in all but two of his last 27 games. This Arizona squad shouldn't cause too many problems on either end for Lindell.
Defensemen to Avoid
Alexander Edler, VAN @ PHI ($20)
Edler is priced as a top-3 defenseman Monday and, in my mind, that's not the correct valuation for him given recent history and matchup. The 32-year-old Swede has one point -- a goal scored against Buffalo on Jan. 18 -- and a minus-1 rating in his last nine games. Philadelphia is home to one of the hottest teams in the NHL right now, so you won't want to take a chance with Edler and his ability to get burned.
Kevin Shattenkirk, NYR vs. LA ($18)
There was a time when Shattenkirk was a highly sought after fantasy commodity, but those days are long gone. Now, the American defenseman is staring at just two goals on the campaign with a terrible 2.3 shooting percentage and a minus-10 rating to boot. Even Shattenkirk's relatively high number of shots cannot salvage his fantasy numbers, so pass over him in this slate.
