2024 Fantasy Outlook
Montour had an incredible 73 points in 80 outings during the 2022-23 campaign, but he dropped back to eight goals and 33 points across 66 regular-season contests last year. His 73-point showing was by far the highest of his career with his next best being 37 in 2021-22, so it's hard to bet on the 30-year-old reaching that mark again. It might be especially difficult for Montour to replicate that career high after moving from the Stanley Cup-winning Panthers to Seattle, which ranked 29th offensively with 2.61 goals per game in 2023-24, over the summer. Sure, Seattle will lean on Montour heavily, but the Canadian blueliner was already getting an average of 23:27 of ice time, including 3:54 with the man advantage, in Florida last season, so it's not like the change of scenery will result in a major increase in responsibilities. There's always that chance Montour will recapture his past offensive glory, but it would be better to pencil him in for around 40 points. Read Past Outlooks

Signing seven-year deal
DSeattle Kraken
July 1, 2024
Montour agreed to terms on a seven-year, $49.98 million contract with Seattle on Monday, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports.
ANALYSIS
Montour was reportedly linked to a move to Utah before the team traded for Mikhail Sergachev on Saturday. Still, the 30-year-old Montour was able to cash in with a long-term deal, one that could be the last of his career. Injuries limited the Ontario native to just 66 regular-season games this past year, in which he generated 33 points, but he was a mainstay in the lineup during the postseason. In the playoffs, Montour averaged 22:39 of ice time, playing in all 24 games while tallying 11 points, including three with the man advantage.

Montour found a new level during the 2022-23 campaign, setting new career highs with 16 goals and 73 points in 80 games, nearly doubling his previous career high of 37 points. After totaling 30 power-play points through six NHL seasons, he racked up 33 points with the man advantage last season alone. He took on a much larger role with the Panthers, averaging 24:08 of ice time per game and racking up 242 shots on goal with 107 PIM. Montour is recovering from offseason shoulder surgery and could miss the start of the 2023-24 campaign. Assuming the absence isn't drastic, the 29-year-old will be in great position for another 60-plus points as a top-four blueliner in one of the league's top-scoring lineups.
Not surprisingly, the move from Buffalo to Florida suited Montour well. In his first full season with the Panthers, Montour finished with career-best marks in both goals (11) and points (37). He added eight points with the man advantage, although his average ice time dipped by more than two and a half minutes to 17:54 per game. Montour's hit and blocked-shot totals are mediocre for a defenseman and he's not going to see time on Florida's No. 1 power-play unit as long as Aaron Ekblad is around, so what we saw from Montour a season ago may very well be his ceiling from a fantasy perspective
Montour split last season between the Sabres and Panthers, totaling seven goals and 18 points over 50 appearances. Over the last two seasons, he's combined for 36 points after eclipsing the 30-point mark in each of the previous two campaigns. Despite the decreasing offensive production, the 27-year-old defenseman averaged 20:29 of ice time per contest and posted a career-high 7.4 shooting percentage on 94 shots in 2020-21. Montour will once again see top-four minutes on a strong offense and could be a minor power-play contributor this year.
Montour drew into 54 games with Buffalo last season, posting 18 points and a plus-13 rating while averaging 19:30 of ice time per contest. The 26-year-old blueliner should skate on the Sabres' second pairing while seeing occasional deployment with the man advantage in 2020-21, and he could threaten the 20-point mark despite the shortened schedule, but that won't make him anything more than a fringe bench option in most fantasy formats.
Montour's 2018-19 season was a mixed bag. While he scored a career-high 35 points between the Ducks and Sabres, the 25-year-old blueliner's three-point increase compared to 2017-18 was accompanied by some drops elsewhere. His rating fell from plus-16 to minus-20, and Montour's power-play production was halved from 12 points to six. Montour will have a hard time carving out meaningful power-play minutes with Rasmus Dahlin and Rasmus Ristolainen ahead of him on the blue-line pecking order, but he can still be a valuable asset on the back end for a hopeful Buffalo team.
Montour finished his first full NHL season with nine goals, 32 points (12 on the power play) and 160 shots on goal in 80 games. In turn, the Ducks rewarded Montour with two more years under contract at $3.388 million annually. The 24-year-old's power-play ability is what sets him apart from Josh Manson as the team's top right-handed defenseman, and the Ducks could desperately use an uptick from Manson -- they finished 23rd in the league by converting 17.8 percent of their opportunities with the man advantage. Montour is a value add in deeper leagues and should be on the top of lists if he's still (somehow) available in keeper formats.
With 89 points (25 goals) through 104 AHL games over the past two seasons, Montour's future is bright. He's currently being deployed as a depth defenseman and watches from the press box some nights, which makes this a sneaky time to buy low on the promising youngster. While Montour is likely still a year or two away from being a reliable asset in yearly settings, don't be surprised if he immediately shines once he's handed a larger role.
