Hagg's lone season in Detroit didn't go well. He was banged up for a good portion of the year and often found himself in the press box when healthy. All told, he appeared in just 38 NHL games (2 goals, 7 points) in 2022-23. There was a time earlier in his career when Hagg posted 258 hits and 158 blocks in a single season with the Flyers but it's difficult to make a consistent fantasy impact when you can't find your way into the lineup. Hagg inked a one-year, $775K deal with Anaheim as a free agent this summer. He stands a much better chance of receiving consistent playing time on a team like the Ducks that are neck deep in a rebuild.
Hagg never lived up to his potential with the Flyers and ended up being shipped to Buffalo in the deal that brought Rasmus Ristolainen to Philadelphia in late July. Hagg has never scored more than five goals or 20 points in a single season, but he should be able to eat plenty of minutes for a rebuilding Sabres team in 2021-22. Where Hagg does make a fantasy impact is in the hit department. He could flirt with 250 hits over the course of a full 82-game campaign while also adding well over 100 blocks. Just keep in mind that it will almost certainly come with an ugly plus-minus rating attached.
Hagg had a down year with 13 points in 49 contests during the 2019-20 campaign, but he added 136 hits and 79 blocked shots as a physical force on the third pairing. Hagg's role isn't to be a huge scoring threat -- rather, he's an intimidating presence on the ice with the skill to chip in at a roughly 20-point pace in a full season. For 2020-21, that translates to somewhere between 12 and 15 points, while he's likely to also collect 100 hits and 70 blocks to round out his stat line. Fantasy managers in deeper formats might have room for him as depth, but he isn't likely to score enough to be of interest in standard leagues.
The 24-year-old excelled as a bottom-pair defenseman in 2018-19, registering five goals and 20 points with a minus-3 rating and 63 PIM in 82 games. He benefited from a 5.8 shooting percentage, which he probably won't repeat this season, but Hagg's fantasy value was largely based on his 258 hits and 158 blocked shots, anyway. Owners in need of blue-line production in those two categories shouldn't hesitate to add Hagg in the later rounds of drafts and consider anything he contributes in the scoring departments as icing on the cake. There's been a lot of movement on the Flyers blue line this summer, but Hagg is fully expected to reprise his role on the team's third pairing in 2019-20.
Hagg led the Flyers with 238 hits and finished fifth on the team with 100 blocks last season. He also added three goals and nine points with a plus-5 rating to at least showcase some offensive ability. This season, Hagg should skate on the Flyers' first or second pairing and receive more playing time with Shayne Gostisbehere. That's going to help his offensive numbers, but owners should consider Hagg a defensive (hits and blocks) specialist.
The 18-year-old Hagg was selected by the Flyers in the second-round of the 2013 draft. Some expected the big defenseman to get taken in the first round, given the offensive prowess he showed during his time in Sweden. He's still a ways from seeing NHL playing time, but could be a target in some keeper leagues.
