Past Fantasy Outlooks
Dermott spent nearly all of 2022-23 on injured reserve with the Canucks -- he was limited to one goal, 10 hits and 10 blocked shots in 11 games. He's yet to play more than 64 games in a season in his career, so there's a very real injury concern here. On top of that, the Coyotes have been busy adding to their blue line in the offseason, which leaves no guarantee Dermott will have a spot in the lineup. If he plays often, he'll likely be a defense-first, third-pairing option, so fantasy managers have little reason to be concerned with his performance in training camp. On a positive note, Arizona has done well with getting players' careers back on track, so this could end up being an on-ice positive for the blueliner.
Dermott had only 11 points in 56 games last year, while adding 76 hits and 58 blocked shots. A second-round pick from 2015, he's yet to establish himself as an everyday NHL player, and that's likely to continue in 2020-21 as the additions of Zach Bogosian and T.J. Brodie will likely eat into the 24-year-old Dermott's opportunities. Dermott does have youth on his side, but he's yet to produce much offensively to interest fantasy managers. All things considered, Dermott likely won't be of interest outside of deeper formats, as he's unlikely to top 15 points this year.
Dermott will start the season on long-term injured reserve because of offseason shoulder surgery, which makes this future top-four defender undraftable unless you have a long bench. Dermott skates well, has good offensive skill, and is a positive possession player, so you should be ready to scoop him off the wire before he returns from IR in late November or early December. The 22-year-old's early production won't be impressive, but he could be skating alongside Morgan Rielly and seeing time on the second power-play unit by February. Yes, he's that talented.
Dermott was a revelation in just 37 games with the Leafs last season. His 13-point production, coupled with his smooth, two-way game was the best third-pairing season witnessed in a long time, especially when you start looking at similarity scores. Dermott's 2017-18 was eerily similar to John Klingberg's and the one played out by Shayne Gostisbehere. Now, he doesn't have the high-end skill of either of those players, but could easily be a 45-50 point, top-four defender someday soon. He deserves a promotion having outgrown the third pairing and is fabulous in transition. The Leafs could use Dermott on his off-side and skate him with Morgan Rielly. You read that right. Ron Hainsey is on the decline and someone will need to step in. Dermott's sophomore season will be fantasy worthy, and he could be one of the steals of upcoming fantasy drafts.
