Falls in flyweight debut
FlyweightUFC
June 15, 2024
Johnson lost to Asu Almabayev via unanimous decision (27-30, 27-30, 27-30) at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Dropping down to flyweight after a run at bantamweight, Johnson, at 6-foot, became the tallest 125-pounder in company history. Sadly, the good times ended there for Jose. He was overwhelmed by the grappling game of Almabayev, giving up six takedowns for 11:24 worth of control time, making it impossible for Johnson to win a decision. It remains to be seen in which weight class Johnson plans to compete moving forward, but if he can make flyweight without issue, that's probably the correct room for the 29-year-old.

Johnson will face Asu Almabayev in a flyweight matchup at UFC Vegas 93 on June 15, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson will apparently be moving down a weight class for this one, so the scales will be worth watching, as the 16-8-0 fighter is massive for the division, standing at 6-0 with a 71-inch reach (advantages of eight and six inches, respectively). Johnson most recently picked up his first official UFC win over Chad Anheliger via submission last November. He had an April fight against Lucas Rocha booked but was forced to withdraw due to undisclosed reasons. Johnson now draws Almabayev, who is a perfect 2-0 in the UFC and hasn't tasted defeat since the regional circuits in 2017.

Johnson is not fighting Lucas Rocha at UFC Vegas 90 on April 6, according to Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl.
ANALYSIS
For an undisclosed reason, Johnson withdrew from the fight with Rocha, which had been scheduled just a little over one month ago. As a result, Rocha is taking on Joshua Van instead.

Johnson will fight Lucas Rocha at UFC Vegas 90 on April 6, Marcel Dorff of Eurosport.nl reports.
ANALYSIS
Johnson took down Chad Anheliger in November to secure his first UFC victory, and he'll now look to make it back-to-back wins against Rocha, who will be making his first appearance in the promotion.
Earns first UFC victory
FlyweightUFC
November 18, 2023
Johnson defeated Chad Anheliger via submission (rear-naked choke) at 4:49 of Round 3 at UFC Fight Night on Saturday in Las Vegas.
ANALYSIS
Johnson make his late-notice UFC debut in August and was submitted by Da'Mon Blackshear in a little less than four minutes. Of course, Blackshear is pretty good, so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise Johnson looked far better here against Anheliger with a full training camp under his belt. He easily dominated the striking exchanges between the two men and fared pretty well on the mat despite allowing Chad to connect on 4-of-8 takedown attempts. Now 1-1 in the UFC, it's nearly impossible to find a 6-foot bantamweight, so Johnson's size alone makes him worth keeping an eye on as the calendar pushes towards 2024.
