Slide continues at Monza
Formula One
September 4, 2024
Verstappen finished sixth at the Italian Grand Prix F1 race at Autodromo Nazionale Monza on Sunday.
ANALYSIS
Verstappen put together the fastest lap time in FP1, but he slipped down the time charts from there and never recovered. He started seventh on the grid, his worst position of the season that wasn't caused by a penalty. He also failed to gain much ground during the race and has now failed to finish in first place in any of the last six races with only two podium finishes in that span. Despite the slide, Verstappen still maintains a 62-point cushion for the Driver Championship.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
After an overall dominant performance last season, Verstappen is expecting a repeat in 2023 after coming away with a Formula One record of 15 wins in a season and the undisputed title of World Champion. The RB18 proved to be no match for the rest of the grid as Verstappen repeatedly battled his way through the pack to finish first a whopping 65% of the time, earning 454 championship points by the conclusion of Abu Dhabi. The driver of the No. 1 Red Bull found no consistent competition with any of the other constructors and kept a firm grip on the championship standings following his only 2 DNFs of the season at Bahrain and Melbourne. Verstappen is truly the man to beat going into the 2023 season; drivers without a consistently reliable vehicle and discipline behind the wheel will find him an insurmountable opponent on track, unless Team Red Bull finds themselves facing a new, unforeseen challenge with the car this year.
