Schalke 04 (6th, 37 pts) at Borussia Dortmund (2nd, 51 pts)

Saturday, May 16, 10:30 AM EDT

Game Preview

The German Bundesliga returns after a hiatus of nearly two months, and it does so with one of the biggest games in the schedule as Borussia Dortmund host Schalke 04 in a new edition of the Revierderby. Despite both sides having plenty of motivation to defeat their rivals, there's a lot at stake if we take a quick look at the standings. Dortmund sit in second place with 51 points, and a win could put them closer to Bayern Munich – Die Roten sit at the top of the table with 55. Meanwhile, Schalke have 37 points, and even though they are quite far from the title race, a win could solidify their position towards clinching a 2020-21 UEFA Europa League berth. The previous meeting between these two clubs ended in a stalemate, and for what it's worth, Dortmund have won just one of their last five matches against Schalke (W1, D2, L2).

Recent form:

Borussia Dortmund: W4, L1

Schalke 04: D2, L3

Projected Lineups

Borussia Dortmund: Roman Burki; Lukasz Piszczek, Manuel Akanji, Mats Hummels; Achraf Hakimi, Thomas Delaney, Julian Brandt, Raphael Guerreiro; Jadon Sancho, Thorgan Hazard; Erling Haaland

Schalke 04: Markus Schubert; Jonjoe Kenny, Jean-Clair Todibo, Matija Nastasic, Bastian Oczipka; Daniel Caligiuri, Weston McKennie, Suat Serdar, Amine Harit; Benito Raman,

Top Picks

Erling Haaland, Dortmund: The Norway international has enjoyed a sizzling start to life in Germany, netting 12 goals in 11 competitive matches for Dortmund. It remains to be seen how well he will perform after a two-month hiatus, but if there's one player capable of scoring goals for fun at the moment, it's him.

Jadon Sancho, Dortmund: The Englishman has been one of the most dominant playmakers in Europe this season, as evidenced by his 14 goals and 15 assists in 23 Bundesliga contests. He will slot right behind Haaland in Dortmund's attacking line and should have plenty of opportunities to either score or create chances.

Matija Nastasic, Schalke 04: Dortmund are the better side and should be in control of possession for prolonged spells. Schalke's defensive line are expected to have a lot of work throughout the match, and if that's the case, Nastasic could be a good alternative to rack up points through defensive stats such as tackles and clearances.

Captain and vice-captain options:

  1. Erling Haaland
  2. Jadon Sancho
  3. Suat Serdar
  4. Matija Nastasic
