Closer Watch

Brewers - Following Francisco Rodriguez's departure via Tuesday's trade, Henderson is the unquestioned closer in the land of brews. Since the latter's activation from the DL on June 9, Rodriguez had gathered the vast majority of save opportunities, with Henderson succeeding on just 1-of-3 chances. Henderson's 18 appearances in the interim have been somewhat hit or miss en route to a 1-2 record, 3.71 ERA, and 1.471 WHIP across 17 innings. However, he has allowed runs in just one of his last eight outings -- including Tuesday's scoreless ninth frame -- with a 9:5 K:BB ratio in seven frames, which is a better indicator of his upcoming performances. For now, he'll hold down the fort in Milwaukee, despite the potential lack of late-inning counting stats from the team with MLB's fourth-worst record.

Yankees - The venerable Mariano Rivera picked up a surprise save Tuesday when his teammates rallied from one run down in the top of the ninth inning, tallying two runs on two hits and a walk on Texas' own stellar save artist, Joe Nathan. While Enter Sandman did not blare in Rangers Ballpark when he trotted out to the mound, Rivera shut down the opposition in short order, utilizing 12 pitches (eight strikes) to notch two strikeouts during a perfect frame, for save No. 32 of the season. Despite a subpar (for him) WHIP of 1.211, his retirement tour can be termed nothing but a success, as the 43-year-old remains the gold standard of firemen across baseball.

Recommended Pickup

Wily Peralta, P, MIL - A pedestrian first three months of the season have suddenly turned around for Peralta, who has racked up four quality starts in his last six nods. During that stretch, his control has been honed in, as he has posted a 3-1 record, 0.87 ERA, 0.968 WHIP, and 32:15 K:BB ratio in 41.1 innings. If he can continue to average nearly seven innings per outing -- or even six for that matter -- the Brewers' bullpen has displayed the ability throughout 2013 to secure victories when not overtaxed. While he next pays a visit to the thin air of Colorado on Friday, Peralta's recent run should be used by savvy owners, until the oasis in Wisconsin evaporates.
