2024 Fantasy Outlook
DeGrom's first season with the Rangers after inking a five-year, $185 million contract ended after just six starts when he required Tommy John surgery in mid-June. Unsurprisingly, he was brilliant when on the mound, boasting an absurd 45:4 K:BB over 30.1 innings while averaging 98.7 mph with his fastball. The hope is that the two-time Cy Young winner can rejoin the Rangers' rotation at some point after the All-Star break, but given that it was his second UCL repair and the fact that he has made just 44 starts over the last four seasons, the rehab could take a little longer than your normal Tommy John surgery. He's been indisputably the best pitcher in the game when healthy, but unless you have unlimited IL spots it's difficult to advocate taking deGrom in a redraft in 2024. Read Past Outlooks
Delivers scoreless line in return
DeGrom (elbow) allowed four hits and struck out four without walking a batter over 3.2 scoreless innings Friday while taking a no-decision in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Mariners.
ANALYSIS
In his first big-league outing since April 28, 2023 and after completing four minor-league rehab starts prior to being activated from the 60-day injured list, deGrom was limited to 61 pitches (41 strikes) in his return to the Texas rotation. Though he was generally sharp during his time on the mound, deGrom is likely to remain on a workload restriction for his next start, which is expected to come next week at home versus the Blue Jays.

Coming off a season where deGrom made only 15 starts while dealing with elbow issues, it took only one spring start before he experienced shoulder soreness. It was soon diagnosed as a stress reaction in his right scapula, which sidelined him until August 2, though that latest injury didn't stop the Rangers from doling out a $185 million contract. The oft-injured right-hander gathered 64.1 inning over 11 starts in 2022, with typically dominant results. He was able to throw all his pitches, again relying on a 99-mph fastball about half of the time. There isn't a bigger wild card in fantasy drafts than deGrom. The pinnacle is the top pitcher in the game, and if he pitches anywhere close to his usual level, deGrom only needs around 150 frames to achieve No. 1 status. He's going to be drafted as one of the first 10 starters off the board, and if he has good spring, it could be top three. Just keep in mind, he'll be 35 years old and including rehab, deGrom has only thrown 182 innings over the last two seasons

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Will remain sidelined
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy believes deGrom could be "two to three weeks away" from returning to action, Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports.
ANALYSIS
The recent update also indicates deGrom will meet with team physicians next Monday to determine whether he can start to ramp up the intensity in his throwing program. The two-time Cy Young winner has struggled with injuries this season and was placed on the injured list on April 29 with inflammation in his throwing elbow, so the Rangers will be cautious with the recovery process. Through his first six starts with the Rangers, deGrom owns a 2.67 ERA across 30.1 innings.
