Mason Montgomery

Mason Montgomery

24-Year-Old PitcherRP
Tampa Bay Rays
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Montgomery was once a highly rated prosect in the Rays organization, but he was becoming increasingly more hittable as he moved up in the organization and the club decided to move him to the pen after a July 12th loss left him 0-6 with a 6.62 ERA in the Durham rotation. Montgomery then went on to work in the bullpen for the Bulls where he struck out 30 in 18.1 innings of work and earned a promotion to the big leagues in early September. Montgomery went on to strike out 17 of the 37 batters he faced in September with a new-found upper 90's fastball and sharp slider. Simply put, Montgomery has found his new home in the bullpen as someone who can come in and get punchies when needed and should be particularly tough on lefties with his fastball/slider combination if he and the club choose to pair down his offerings to that combination. As it stands now, he could be the primary lefty out of the pen in high leverage with the departure of Collin Poche who previously held that role. Read Past Outlooks

Summoned from minors
PTampa Bay Rays
September 5, 2024
The Rays selected Montgomery's contract from Triple-A Durham on Thursday, Tricia Whitaker of Bally Sports Sun reports.
ANALYSIS
Montgomery has taken off since moving to the bullpen full-time at Durham last month, turning in 9.2 scoreless innings with a 20:5 K:BB. The left-hander could eventually work his way into high-leverage situations but should work in middle relief initially. Montgomery will be making his major-league debut when/if he gets into a game.

Stat Review
How does Mason Montgomery compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB
    Strikeout to walk ratio.
  • K/9
    Average strikeouts per nine innings.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
Montgomery has had a successful run in the Rays system since being drafted in the 6th round of the 2021 draft. The lefty has gone 14-7 with a 2.95 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, and has 335 punchouts in 259 innings of work getting all the way up to Triple-A Durham to finish the 2023 season. He follows the organizational blueprint of working off a riding fastball with a great feel for a changeup while working in a slider. His Double-A numbers were likely impacted by the experimental testing of the baseballs in the Southern League as Montgomery was uncharacteristically generous with his walks and homers but remains on track to be in the periphery of consideration for usage by the Rays in 2024. He is currently not on their 40-man roster which inhibits his path to fantasy viability in 2024 unless the Rays either go through another round of injury attrition or the club does some roster reshuffling in December or January.
Deceptive southpaws aren't in high demand in dynasty leagues due to a perceived lack of upside, but Montgomery is one of the best deceptive southpaws in the minors and could be more than a back-end starter. The 22-year-old compiled a 1.06 WHIP, .196 AVG against and 171:43 K:BB in 124 innings across High-A and Double-A. He has good size at 6-foot-2, 195 pounds and hides the ball so well that he regularly gets whiffs in the zone on his 89-91 mph fastball. At times he was up to the mid-90s, and the book might not be closed on him adding another tick. Evaluators have compared Montgomery's fastball to ex-Ray Joe Ryan's fastball, just thrown by a lefty. Like Ryan, Montgomery can get by just with his fastball, but he also has a good changeup and third-pitch slider. He doesn't need more velocity to project as a solid No. 3 or No. 4 starter, however, as his command and control are plus. Montgomery is probably a year away from getting his shot in the big-league rotation.
