Asante Samuel

24-Year-Old CornerbackCB
Los Angeles Chargers
2024 Fantasy Outlook
There's a lot riding on Samuel in his fourth professional season as the cash-strapped Chargers let multi-year starter Michael Davis leave via free agency and didn't select any rookie defensive backs until Day 3 of the 2024 draft. As a result, the 24-year-old will be the team's most experienced starting cornerback despite struggling frequently in 2023 as the de-facto top option, when he logged 63 tackles and two picks in 17 regular-season contests. A Jim Harbaugh-led defense has typically been successful in the NFL, but it'll be interesting to see if Samuel's abilities at corner will prove up to the task. Read Past Outlooks

Samuel (shoulder) is active for Sunday's game against the Raiders.
ANALYSIS
Samuel tweaked his shoulder during Friday's practice, but it isn't serious enough to hold him out of the Chargers' regular-season opener. The 2021 second-round pick will start opposite Kristian Fulton at corner.

Samuel emerged as a capable starter in Year 2 and was forced into the role of top cornerback after the injury to J.C. Jackson in Week 7. While the 23-year-old hasn't developed into the opportunistic playmaker his father was, he hasn't been a weak link either as he's posted back-to-back seasons with 11 pass breakups. Samuel could end up playing primarily in the slot if both Jackson and Michael Davis are healthy to begin the season, but his flexibility as a boundary corner has been critical when the Chargers suffer their yearly rash of injuries.
Samuel recorded 43 tackles and two interceptions in what was an injury-bugged rookie campaign as he missed a total of five games due to two separate concussions. Heading into 2022, Samuel is likely to overtake veteran Michael Davis' outside cornerback duties while offseason signing Bryce Callahan slides into the vacacted slot corner role. Los Angeles also signed second-team All-Pro cornerback J.C. Jackson, who figures to handle opposing teams' No. 1 receivers throughout the course of the season.
Samuel fills a direct need at corner after the loss of Casey Hayward, but the second-round pick may need some time before he gets completely acclimated to the NFL game.
