Drake Maye

22-Year-Old QuarterbackQB
New England Patriots
2024 Fantasy Outlook
The Patriots made Maye the third overall pick in this year’s draft, hoping he’s the QB of the future that Mac Jones failed to be. Jones, the 15th overall pick in 2021, was traded in March to Jacksonville. Maye will compete for the starting job with free-agent acquisition Jacoby Brissett. Even if Maye isn’t the Week 1 starter, he likely will be under center at some point. At 6-4, 223, Maye has prototypical size, with a strong and talented arm that can both attack defenses deep and slip balls into tight windows. Scouts praised his vision and anticipation, and he’s an athletic dual threat who rushed for 1,147 yards and 16 TDs his last two years at North Carolina. Maye is a bit of a gunslinger, prone to ill-advised passes, and inconsistent mechanics and poor footwork at times hurt his accuracy, especially on routine short throws. But the Patriots have time to develop that while Brissett handles QB duty. The bigger issue is a lack of playmakers. The WR depth chart is topped by Kendrick Borne, who is coming off an ACL injury, and Demario Douglas, a 2023 sixth-round pick who failed to score last season. Second-round rookie Ja’Lynn Polk might already be the best wide receiver, and tight end Hunter Henry could be the No. 2 target. Maye, however, at least gives the Patriots hope in the post-Belichick era. Read Past Outlooks

Added reps part of development plan
QBNew England Patriots
September 13, 2024
Coach Jerod Mayo noted that Maye is getting about 30 percent of the reps with the Patriots' top offense in practice, as part of the young QB's development plan, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com and Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald report.
ANALYSIS
Veteran signal-caller Jacoby Brissett led the team to a Week 1 win over the Bengals and remains the Patriots' starter at this stage, but Mayo acknowledged that Maye, the No. 3 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, is seeing more first-team reps than a typical backup would, with an eye toward preparing him for an eventual ascent to the top of the depth chart down the road. "Normally, it's the starter gets let's say 95 percent of the reps, and the backup doesn't," Mayo relayed Friday. "With this a little bit different. And we had a conversation. How do we, I guess the struggle is, how do you get your starting quarterback prepared for the game and also continue to develop the guy in the background, which is Drake. And so it is like a 70/30 split."

Opening season as No. 2 QB
QBNew England Patriots
August 29, 2024
Maye will open the 2024 season as the Patriots' No. 2 quarterback after head coach Jerod Mayo announced Jacoby Brissett as his starter Thursday, Mike Reiss of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The rookie had reportedly closed the gap with Brissett in recent weeks, but Mayo cited the latter's knowledge of the team's offense and his body of work since the spring as the deciding factors in the job battle. Maye was unsurprisingly diplomatic about the situation when asked, noting he naturally wanted to win out but understood the situation and adding he'd prepare like a starter each week in the event he was called upon. "I felt like I had a good camp. I feel like I'm throwing it well. Played well throughout the preseason," he said. "So other than that, keep my head down and keep working. I don't think anything's changed."
