Not much went right for the Jets in 2023, but the emergence of Johnson was one. After a quiet rookie season for the 2022 first-round pick, he more than doubled his defensive snap count and his production followed suit. Brought in to get after the quarterback, Johnson accomplished that goal by creating 56 total pressures (per PFF), good for a mark inside the top-25 in the league among edge rushers. Johnson also did enough as a run-stopper, tallying 20 tackles in the role. With Bryce Huff and John Franklin-Myers out of the picture, Johnson should have the chance to step into a leadership role along the defensive line and his production could take another jump forward in his third season as a pro. Torn Achilles confirmed
Johnson confirmed Monday via a post on his personal Instagram account that he suffered a torn right Achilles' tendon in Sunday's 24-17 win over the Titans, Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
The news was expected but is still a blow for Johnson and the Jets defense, especially with edge rusher Haason Reddick in the midst of a holdout. With Johnson out for the season and no obvious end in sight for Reddick's holdout, Will McDonald and Micheal Clemons will likely serve as the Jets' starting defensive ends beginning with Thursday's game against the Patriots. Johnson will likely be placed on injured reserve in the coming days and will presumably undergo surgery in the near future.
