Tillery (lower leg) was absent from Minnesota's injury report Wednesday ahead of Sunday's Week 1 game against the Giants.
ANALYSIS
Tillery was carted off the field with a lower leg injury during a practice in early August, but it appears he's recovered in time for the Vikings' regular-season opener Sunday. The veteran defensive lineman signed a one-year contract worth up to $3.75 million with Minnesota this past offseason, and he figures to line up as one of the team's top defensive ends in 2024.

2019
Claimed off waivers by the Raiders in November of 2022, Tillery provided the team with 10 tackles (eight solo) throughout Las Vegas' final eight contests, playing 248 defensive snaps and another 42 snaps on special teams. Tillery re-signed with the Raiders this offseason, and he'll compete for a starting role at defensive tackle.
Tillery hasn't lived up to the billing after the Chargers selected the defensive end in the first round of the 2019 Draft, but he's started all but two games since entering the league and has improved from a statistical perspective each season. Expect the 25-year-old to work in rotation along a defensive front seven that saw a number of new additions to the mix this offseason.
The switch to Brandon Staley's 3-4 scheme could prove critical for the 2019 first-round pick. Tillery's versatility allowed him to ping-pong between nose tackle and defensive end throughout 2020, but the additional playing time didn't translate into more sacks. With long-time veteran Melvin Ingram now gone, Tillery is expected to fill the pass-rushing void alongside emerging outside linebacker Uchenna Nwosu.
A torn labrum in Tillery's shoulder isn't expected to keep the 28th overall selection in the 2019 NFL Draft off the field for long. Out of the gate, Tillery is expected to serve as an interior pass rusher for the Chargers, likely splitting time with Justin Jones, Brandon Mebane and Isaac Rochell. Down the road, however, it's possible the 22-year-old could be used more as an edge rusher if Melvin Ingram becomes a cap causality in 2020.

Roster spot not certain
DTLos Angeles Chargers

Tillery could be a candidate to get cut before the start of the season, Daniel Popper of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
The Chargers already declined Tillery's fifth-year option earlier this offseason, but it would still be a surprise to see the team give up on the 2019 first-round pick so soon. Popper notes the addition of Morgan Fox, an interior pass-rushing specialist, during the later stages of free agency makes Tillery's role redundant unless he's able to improve as a run defender. At the very least, the pressure is on the 25-year-old Tillery to finally realize his vast potential.
