Jessie Bates

27-Year-Old SafetyS
Atlanta Falcons
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Bates signed a four-year, $64 million deal with the Falcons prior to the 2023 season, making him one of the highest-paid safeties in the league. He lived up to that billing in his first year with the team, topping 1,000 defensive snaps for the first time since 2020. Bates primarily continued to work as a traditional free safety, though the one area he was asked to expand his usage was by stepping into coverage in the slot at a higher rate. He took quite well to that role, posting one of his better completion percentage against rates (63.2 percent) of his career as well as limiting receivers to 12.4 yards per reception. It's difficult to expect more than the 2023 stat line that Bates contributed, but there's no doubt that he'll remain a stalwart with the Atlanta defense. Read Past Outlooks

Bates is listed as a starting safety on the Falcons' official depth chart, Will McFadden of the Falcons' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
This isn't a surprise. However, the Falcons signing fellow safety Justin Simmons and trading for outside linebacker Matthew Judon late in training camp was a major surprise. The newcomers are listed as backups on the official depth chart, but that's expected to change as they get acclimated to head coach Raheem Morris' scheme. Bates starred during his first season in Atlanta last year, finishing with 133 tackles (89 solo), 11 pass defenses, six interceptions, three forced fumbles and one defensive touchdown across 17 appearances.

Bates signed a four-year contract with the Falcons this offseason after five years in Cincinnati. The 2018 second-round pick has never played fewer than 15 games in a season and had 100-plus tackles in each of his first three campaigns. He also has 14 interceptions, including a career-high four in 2022. His tackling production has dropped in each of the last two years, but Bates remains an elite playmaker and is one of the Falcons' best defenders. The 26-year-old is slated for a hefty workload, but his turnover potential may take a hit if Atlanta's defense isn't considerably improved in 2023.
Bates has been one of the top safeties for four years, but 2021 was arguably his worst season. Rather than the start of a decline, Bates’ regression more likely marks an aberration that will soon be corrected with a bounce back. His 88 tackles and one interception in 15 games last year were acceptable, but that’s not quite the standard he set his first three years, all of which hit triple-digit tackles and three interceptions.
If Bates played for a better team he'd probably get much more recognition. At the moment, it's mostly just Bengals fans and IDP investors who appreciate his talent, which he has demonstrated beyond doubt in his three seasons out of Wake Forest. Bates logged at least 1,050 snaps and triple-digit tackles in each of those seasons, intercepting three passes in each year as well. Bates has done all this while playing well in coverage, so he doesn't inflate his stats with cheap tackles. He's very much capable of a monster season that puts him in the race for the No. 1 defensive back IDP distinction.
Although he won't be 24 until October, it's probably safe to call Bates one of the league's best safeties as he heads into his third year. It took a huge snap count to get there (2,197), but through 32 games he has 211 tackles and six interceptions, putting him at the 100-tackle, three-interception threshold in both seasons. He should continue to produce along those lines, both because he's good and because Cincinnati's uptempo offense should assure a high snap count for the defense. As long as his snap count stays above 1,000, Bates' tackle count should stay on course for 100 or more.
Bates was a bright light on a Cincinnati defense that was mostly horrific last year, totaling 111 tackles while doing what he could to stop the bleeding in the Bengals secondary by intercepting three passes and allowing a 58.7 passer rating when targeted. The second-round pick out of Wake Forest is a standout athlete who won't turn 23 until October, so his growth should soften the blow of the tackle regression he's likely to see this year. The Bengals should be bad again, so the conditions that made Bates improbably productive last year mostly remain in place.

Hoping to stay in Cincy
SCincinnati Bengals
January 30, 2023
Bates would like to return to the Bengals in 2023, Olivia Ray of WLWT Cincinnati reports.
ANALYSIS
The safety played on the franchise tag this season, a decision which seemed to cause some friction last summer between Bates and the team, but with unrestricted free agency approaching the 25-year-old made it clear he didn't want to play for another team. "I'd love to be here, but that's out of my control," Bates said Monday. "Whatever happens at the end of the day, I can say I love my brothers like no other. I played my heart out like no other. And that's all you can really control, at the end of the day." Cincinnati is also facing the prospect of losing Vonn Bell in free agency, so one of the two could be brought back by the Bengals next season and starting alongside 2022 first-round pick Dax Hill.
