Trask appeared in four games during the 2024 regular season and completed his only pass attempt for five yards while netting minus-4 yards on five carries.
ANALYSIS
The third-year pro put up only one pass attempt for the second straight season, as Baker Mayfield once again suited up for all 17 regular-season games and the Buccaneers' wild-card loss to the Commanders. Trask has only 11 pass attempts over seven regular-season contests across his first four seasons, and he's now slated for unrestricted free agency once the new league year begins March 12. The 2021 second-round pick would likely be welcomed back by the Buccaneers, but Trask may want to seek out a team where his path to playing time may be a bit more realistic.

Trask hoped to push Baker Mayfield for starts last season, but that never materialized and he ended up attempting just one pass (which fell incomplete). With Mayfield back in the fold with a new $100 million contract, the song remains the same for Trask. At 6-5, 236, Trask has a strong arm and threw with touch and accuracy in college, but as long as Mayfield keeps performing, he’s stuck as the backup. The Buccaneers return their key offensive playmakers, and while offensive coordinator Dave Canales bolted for Carolina, Tampa Bay hired former Kentucky OC Liam Coen to continue the Sean McVay-derived offense -- Coen previously coached under McVay with the Rams. Trask isn’t particularly mobile, so probably wouldn’t offer much rushing upside if he takes the field.
A 2021 second-round pick, Trask spent the last two years watching Tom Brady before getting the chance this summer to compete with Baker Mayfield for a starting job. The Bucs settled on Mayfield as the Week 1 starter after two weeks of preseason action, but Trask still stands a decent chance to make starts at some point this year. The 6-5 Trask is at least four inches taller than Mayfield, who has a similarly large advantage when it comes to experience -- Trask has nine NFL pass attempts to his name, all of which came in Week 18 last season. While not particularly mobile, Trask was excellent in the pocket at Florida with a 67.9 percent completion rate and 69/15 TD/INT, highlighted by 4,283 yards and 43 TDs his senior year. He has a strong arm, with touch and accuracy to stretch the field. The Bucs have quality receiving options and hired first-time coordinator Dave Canales, a long-time Seattle assistant who last year coached quarterbacks. Trask has untapped potential, whereas the 28-year-old Mayfield is a known quantity.
Trask spent his rookie season getting a priceless first-hand look at Tom Brady and his daily routine. The Florida product again will have a chance to immerse himself in that process this season, as both Brady and Blaine Gabbert are back and therefore project to relegate Trask to third-string duties. Trask, whose upside is underscored by the 7,224 passing yards and 68 touchdowns he compiled in his two-year starting stint for the Gators, figures to get plenty of reps throughout the remainder of OTAs, training camp and preseason before retreating to a much less active role during the regular season.
While there was plenty of attention heaped on other signal-callers in this year's draft, Trask wasn't exactly without pedigree after racking up 7,224 passing yards and 68 touchdowns versus 15 interceptions in his two-season starting stint at Florida. He isn't especially mobile but still had seven rushing scores during that span. Trask now gets a chance to rub elbows with future Hall of Famer Tom Brady and his veteran backup, Blaine Gabbert. There's a chance Trask is ticketed for the practice squad to open his career, considering the Buccaneers also opted to bring back Ryan Griffin. However, the franchise clearly believes he's worth a long look by virtue of the second-round investment made in him.

Likely in line for No. 2 job
QBTampa Bay Buccaneers
August 23, 2024
Trask appears to have locked up the Buccaneers' No. 2 quarterback job over John Wolford with his performance in Tampa Bay's preseason finale against the Dolphins on Friday night.
ANALYSIS
Wolford suffered a rib injury that caused his exit from the Buccaneers' second preseason contest, but he was back at practice Monday. Nevertheless, once Trask took over from Baker Mayfield after the latter's first-quarter cameo, he went the rest of the way for Tampa Bay on Friday. The third-year signal-caller completed 17 of 24 passes for 141 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions against Miami's reserves, almost certainly cementing the No. 2 role for the second straight season. Greg Auman of FOXSports.com reports Trask talked up the value of the extended opportunity he received Friday, particularly key for a player that has only 10 regular-season pass attempts in his first two years but is one big hit on Mayfield away from having to step in.
